Nimrod thread.

XV262 in July 1979...
I am not a loony... I used to be, but I think I am better now...

A less than inspiring shot of XZ280 in September 1980...

Re: Nimrod thread.
And, bringing up the rear, AEW.3 XZ286 at Farnborough at the end of August 1980...
That leaves the following to still be accounted for: XV256, XV257, XV261, XZ283 and the prototype XV147. Any takers?

Re: Nimrod thread.
Can't help with XV147 but here's XV148, caught on approach to RAE Bedford in October 1978. Sorry about the quality. Both were built as Comet 4Cs and later modified to serve as aerodynamic prototypes for the Nimrod.
I've no idea what development work XV148 might have been engaged in by 1978. According to MAM its front fuselage is with a private owner at Malmesbury, Wilts.

Re: Nimrod thread.
XV148 was a structural test rig at Woodford for years. The nose was also there but moved into preservation as mentioned. The noseless fuse ended up at Warton as part of the MRA4 program. This was about 8 years ago if I remember correctly.

Re: Nimrod thread.
No pictures of XV256 have appeared, but that was quite an early loss (Nov 1980) so probably not surprising. Its accident is well documented in a book I have at home (the one with the picture of an RAF Phantom crashing to the ground with its nose cone open at Alconbury - the name escapes me). I am hoping this year at Waddington I'll get a final chance to see a spey-engined Nimrod take-off - or is that a forlorn hope.

So do we still have a couple of R1's in service then, and how long for?

Using the threads on the main board, think I am correct in saying the two remaining 'R-models' at Waddington go on until 2011 (but before the normal airshow date).
Re: Nimrod thread.
Found one more at an open day at Aldergrove June 1997 XV241 sporting a rather nice blue tail

Re: Nimrod thread.
With the exception of '250 for Elvington, has the identities of any of the other Nimrods for preservation been released?

I was at Abo, when these flew in, the wing tip pods were removed & takem to Waddington by road & the airframes towed to the scrapping area.

These are my only Nimrod shots, but funnily enough they cover each variant that flew in the digital era!
