Prototype, Test, & Experimental Aircraft Thread

Post by Tommy »

Seeing everything at MAKS and Monino gave me an idea for one of these themed photo threads:

Let's see your shots of any prototype, test and/or experimental aircraft! I know the line between these and operational machines can be quite blurry at times, so I'll leave the interpretation of subject matter pretty broad.

Couple of mine from Russia:

As Andy put it, the TSR-2ski - or more accurately, the T-6-1; prototype to the Su-24, at Monino.
Image

Little introduction needed here - The Yak-141, one of just two built, to be the Russian Navy's next STOVL aircraft. I saw both of them whilst in Russia - winner. This one at Monino.
Image

Finally, the MiG "Project 1.44" - designed as Russia's answer to the stealth game before funding dried up. It would be some years until the T-50 would come along, and it feels like there's a bit of this machine's DNA in the PAK-FA
Image

So the floor's open, guys 'n' gals. Over to you.

Cool tread.

To begin with, Gromov's Su-27, used for flight control tests. Taken at the Mosaero 2001 show. Scanned from slide.

What I believe is the prototype F-2A, 63-8501, of the test unit, Hiko Kaih Jik.

The prototype Kawasaki C-1, still flying and designated the C-1FTB

A couple from my Flikr Site of interest

Boeing X-32B
The other contender for the JSF contest that brought us the F-35 Lightning. The X-32B has full conventional and VTOL take off performance but was ultimately unsuccessful. Pictured preserved at NAS Patuxent River Museum

General Dynamics F-111 Static test airframe
What appears to be a static test airframe from the troubled early years of the F-111 program. Caught preserved at the Southwestern Aerospace Museum, Fort Worth (next to Airforce Plant 4 where the F-111 was built) in 1988

Your welcome, I thought that with a name like that you would have no difficulty finding it. I remember seeing it in the late 50s, not certain where. Robin.

Having spoken to Carl Tyers yesterday, this is not the case. It is still yet to make its first flight post-restoration.

Here's a couple from Cosford earlier this year...
