German Gems & British Beauties: Hamilton, Ontario

German Gems & British Beauties: Hamilton, Ontario

Postby sylvancatharsis on Sun 16 Jun 2013, 7:01 pm

You might have seen the report I did for UKAR on this show last year, which celebrated the Canadian Warplane Heritage's 40th Anniversary. That show was definitely a highlight of the 2012 air show season. So why not again in 2013? Well, as I mentioned in the "Overseas and Worldwide Airshows" topic this year there were a few bugs in the system that added a great deal of frustration to what could've been an equally good show. That having been said, the aircraft were superb, although I fear this show's days may be numbered as WestJet continues to build up its presence at Hamilton International Airport and the flying display has to be built around their schedule. Hopefully this is not the case.

Anyway, on with the photos.

1. Highlight of the show, and grand finale. Should've been a second Spitfire but sadly it went tech on the day. Still looked and sounded brilliant!
Image

2. The Red Arrows may be the "Best of British," but these may also qualify for the title!
Image

3. Star of the show for many...
Image

4. And it is a beautiful aircraft, but...
Image

5. ...this edged the Mossie out (slightly) as the highlight for me!

6.

7. The FlugWerk 190 joined the 262 but was a bit difficult to shoot due to being fairly far from the crowd.
Image

8. That's almost a topside!

9. The "almost-display" by the Lysander. See "Overseas and Worldwide Airshows" topic.

10. Firefly topside!

11. Vintage Wings of Canada's lovely Corsair

16. It wouldn't be a Canadian air show without Harvards.

17. DC-3 jump ship for the opening parachute drop
Image

18. Thought this would be appropriate for this forum
Image

19. Did you hear about the new recruit for the Snowbirds? He isn't very good at keeping formation...
Image

20. The Aurora display had a mixed crew of Canadian, British, and Australian personnel.
Image

21. Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only fast jet display in the Western Hemisphere!

26. The Spit that went tech, a Mk IX

28. Hercules wide-angle. There was also a CC-130J.

29.

30. Star of the static display for me
Image

31. Lockheed 12-A Electra
Image

32. Paul Keppeler's CT-133. I know money's an issue but I'd like to see him fly it at the show sometime.
Image

33. Not as exciting as a 727.
Image

And two from Friday evening's arrivals and rehearsals. I arrived at around 6:30 PM just as the six-ship Merlin formation was breaking (along with their B-25 photo ship) but it did provide this unique formation that did not take place at the show:

35. The Aurora was the last arrival, and this is the closest I got to a decent topside of it at the show.

Hope these are of interest.

Wether it was up to the 2012 show standards or not, this is still orgasmic to look at!

Great pics, love the Hornet topside (sounds weird with you saying its the only fast jet display in the Western Hemisphere... never thought I'd hear those words), and I love the Lanc, Hurri, Spit and Mossie formation.

Thanks for posting.

Great post. Some very good pictures there of aircraft/types not seen on here much if ever. Just hope we get to see a Mossie over here again at a few different airshows to give people from around the country a chance to see it without having to go to just place
Number 2 just about wins it for me

Nice, the Mossie & Me26 look great, shame they're not in the same blue skies as the statics. Did the gold F-86 fly?

Sadly no, relegated to the static.

Thanks all for the kind comments!

Excellent set Sean, lucky seeing the Mossie. I had to settle for hangar shots in Ardmore  Would be nice to see a 262 in the UK, replica or no replica. Legends one day??

Lovely shots. Hard to pick a favourite. Mossie and Firefly both fabulous. Love the F-18 take-off shot too - yet another nice demo scheme.
