My First Pics
My username gives away what I was up to for most of 2008. Finding myself at airshows most weekends, I decided I ought to have a go at taking pretty pictures of aeroplanes. It's not as easy as you chaps make it look, is it? A camera arrived late summer, and here are the paltry results of many hours of snapping. I should like to thank all those who have helped me with assistance and advice, not just on pointing a camera, but on what to buy, how to use Photoshop, and what looks good on screen. My particular thanks go to Karl Drage and Mark Kerton without whom I wouldn't have come even this far.
I've posted these seeking your advice on how to be better, so please don't hold back.
The majestic King Air with some other jets.
Give one of these a go if you can!
A helicopter.
A big one.
An even bigger one.
Some red ones.
Two red ones nearly crashing into each other.
Managed to get one (half) decent shot of this.
Not a great shot, I know, but I think the chaps did an excellent job last year and should be duly proud. So sad there'll be no Role Demo for 2009.
Malta.
Cranwell.
Over Lincolnshire.
Anchorage, Alaska.
Hope you like something in there.
Leon

Leon,
To say they're some of your first images there's some really good shots there. You've got a shot there I never seem to get right with the Reds crossover and I've been trying for 5 years now digital.
Look forward to seeing some more.

Re: My First Pics
First welcome to the board, this is a good set for the first time hope to see some more from you.
The last pic is the best of the bunch.
composition is good and you have a good eye for a picture.
Paul.

Re: My First Pics
As Glenn's said Leon, you've done a good job with your first offerings! Thoughtful compositions throughout, and I just love that last Asiana shot climbing out of Ted Stevens. What a great location that is. Must get back there some time.
My only major criticism would be with the Vulcan shot which has a bit of the dreaded "Ready Brek glow" about it (did you use Shadow/Highlight tool or similar?).
All told though, a fine start.

Well done, Leon. Great dramatic capture on the last shot.

Re: My First Pics
Very nice start, quite like shots 1, 10, 11 and 12, plus the Red Arrows crossover. Some very nice compositions as well. What camera are you using ?
Re: My First Pics
All nice shots for first attempts, and the launch of that 747 is a bit special, great lighting on the Sentry shot as well, although the descriptions leave alot to be desired.....

Re: My First Pics
Gents,
Thanks for your kind words.
Karl, You're right: the halo comes from even the slightest adjustment of levels. This was one of the first pics I tweaked and I could probably do a better job now. I'll give it a try.
Kieron, I'm using a D300.
Here are a few more:
A big nose.
Tried to salvage something arty from this one.
The red ones again.
They can do clever things with smoke. Much like a Dutch girl I once knew.
Am I allowed to post this? Although it's not an aeroplane, it is owned by the RAF.

Re: My First Pics
Reds cross is a sweet capture!
Nice set all round and very impressive as a first photo posting. I know you've mentioned level adjs already, but the only negative that stands out for me are the colours on the Blades Extra, which look a bit unnatural and over-contrasted.
Thanks for a great season of displays last year - quite a routine!

Re: My First Pics
Paul,
I know exactly what you mean - the Blades pic is rather vibrant. I was previously shooting some landscapes and forgot to adjust my settings: I was following Ken Rockwell's advice and had turned up the saturation on the camera. What you see was actually toned down in Photoshop, although it still looks brighter than the reality on the day. I tried flattening it further, but didn't like the results. Can you suggest what might be a good fix?
Glad you enjoyed the display.

Re: My First Pics
Nice stuff there I have to disagree with you Lomcevak, I reckon that the Blades shot is the best of the bunch!
Re: My First Pics
Nice set! The air-to-air shot of the Kingair is lovely!

Dan,
Here's one with nothing but a little sharpening. Better methinks. Thanks.
Does that still work for you Lumix?
