Thunder Over Michigan

Thunder Over Michigan

Judging by the social media posts leading up to the show, one might have been inclined to think that Thunder was moving toward a more "traditional" air show ethos, seeing as just about every post was about the Thunderbirds. Fortunately, I never lost faith, and as usual, it rocked.

1. For example, there was one of these:

2. And one of these:

3. Nice to see one of these again after so many years:

4. Did I mention there was one of these?

5. If not, there was a P-63C KingCobra at the show. The only one airworthy, I believe.

6. The Sabre display was absolutely outstanding.

7. The crowd faces into the sun for most of the afternoon, so not many good Liberator shots:
(Willow Run Airport was a B-24 production facility, so quite fitting that Diamond Lil' should be here)

8. I'll get to the static display later, but this was sweet to see:

9. This year's theme aircraft was the Texan/Harvard. Not quite the 29 originally scheduled, but impressive no less:

10. Naturally, the Yankee Air Museum's flagship was in attendance:

11. Along with her stable mate:

12. It just wouldn't be a warbird show without a Mustang or two. And in fact, we had three (of six scheduled); sadly, the F-6 photo recce variant didn't fly.

13. Oh yeah, and these guys stopped by:

15. Ever seen one of these?

16. The Germans came, too. I know they're a dime a dozen at European shows, but we don't see these in the States too often:

17. KingCobra on the ground:

18. Baltia Airlines. America's newest airline, headquartered at Willow Run Airport. With non-stop service from the USA to bustling destinations like St. Petersburg, Riga, and Vilnius. On a 40-year-old aircraft.
Hey, I hope it works.

19. With all the cancellations (P-51B, P-40, C-46, several T-6s) I hoped these guys would've filled their spots in the flying display. No luck.

20. The Thunderbolt did fly, I just didn't get any upload-worthy shots of it.

21. Isn't that nice? You're trying to shoot the P-63 and someone parks in your way...

22. Lots of these:

23. The C-47 looks sweet in the early morning light:

25. I know I already posted a similar shot, but... I really like this P-3 firebomber:

26. Harvards from Canada are nice, too:

33. Naturally, the sun decided to chill behind a cloud just as the big dark plane was coming in. It came back out about three minutes later. Dick.

34. And lastly, the P-63 landing after rehearsing its display:

All in all, a great day out with fantastic weather. And for all of you bleating on how atrocious George Bacon is, feel free to send him over here. I'll gladly trade you the commentary team we had. Nauseating country music and all.

Fantastic set, some great aircraft there! The King Cobra, Lodestar and B-24 are highlights for me, great light on the P-3 too. I wish I could get over for a few US shows...

Hope to see more?

What a corking set of images, I can see why the King Cobra popped up a fair few times, as well as the Orion :hypno:
