Cakemeister at Shuttleworth Season Premiere

It was nice to get the season underway in such glorious conditions. Bought my ticket about an hour before they sold out and really pleased I made the effort despite all the changes. Great venue and people.

Lovely shots, that's a great piece of glass you have there. All good but particularly fond of the P-40 banking in.

Likewise.

Probably the best set of the flying I've seen - I gave up on it after the P-40 and spent the day roaming around for ground shots and stuff on the cross runway. Sad times.

Very nice set.

I have to comment that some of the photos I've seen, such as these, do not bear out the claims that the show was dead as a spectacle. Maybe not what is was before, but it still looks worth seeing to me.

Sharp as a bloody tack, and beautifully composed as always. Well done.

Thanks all for your kind feedback.

I found photography very challenging to begin with but stuck with the display action and gradually found things improved. The main difference now is that, traditionally I would generally have operated with a 1:1 body and 400mm lens interspersed with a 1.6:1 body for some of the smaller stuff. Now, it's entirely a 1.6:1 event. Others were using teleconverters and I'm sure there is a lot more cropping than before. See a typical shot before this year with a 1:1 body:

A lot more cropping would now be required with that combination.

The reality is that good photography is still quite possible. However, my number of decent shots reduced quite a bit. I will definitely be going back and it was great to see so many of our wider crowd attending. I can't recall going to an event where the volunteers helping out car parking etc. were as polite/friendly as those in attendance on Sunday.

Well done Shuttleworth.

Great set there Richard (as to be expected). Looks like your lens workout was worth it.

I especially like No.4 - lovely scheme on that Moth, and I still haven't got a good shot of it myself!

Thanks Phil, it was great to see you and a very pleasant day all round. I failed miserably with the P-40 so think location had quite a big part to play as to what you achieved well or otherwise. Here is another similar shot to no. 4 at a previous event but taken with at 1:1 sensor. It demonstrates again the new regime we now find ourselves in!
