Duxfords of the Recent Past

Post by Dr Cake »

I didn't get to a single show at Duxford in 2016. To be honest, I'm unsure whether I missed out much or not - the reports I received from people on the ground seemed to vary widely. Over the last 15 years I've been to 11 Duxford shows. Since about the mid naughties my decision on possible attendance has been a 'if weather good, if convenient, might consider it' approach. Quite often, I've only finalised my plans the night before. Six hours of driving plus breaks plus inevitable delays leaving the car park meant I really needed to guarantee decent ish results to bother, particularly due to the relatively high cost. I know enthusiasts much closer by who take exactly the same approach. In all honesty, it's not been the easiest of shows for me, the general effort of attending and the sun position being the main culprits. I'd probably like it a lot more if I lived ten minutes down the road.

That said, I've only been outside once and have generally spent the day in first class company. After a break of three years I returned in 2012. Here's some imagery from the events that I managed to attend. I hope you find them of interest.

Duxford Jubilee Airshow (2012 spring show)

Certainly one of the best Duxfords I've been to for photography. A very good day out and thoroughly enjoyed it:

Next stop, September show 2012. Seem to recall a very late decision to attend but pleased I did.

In 2013, I also managed to get to the Spring and September shows. First a small sample from the Spring show:

Now onto 2014, only managed to get to the D-Day anniversary (Spring) show:

Finally, onto 2015. An ultra-late decision to go to Legends on the Sunday after a couple of days at Yeovilton. Decided to go outside for the first time. Ended up on the 'mound'. It's not a mound, just the end of a track. There were lots there and am pleased I experienced it. I'll certainly not forget it.

Wonderful stuff, Dr.C!

A number of these photos have brought back some great memories; particularly the 2013 Spring airshow, which was the best Duxford event I have been to... Glad you featured Princess Liz!

Great stuff as always Richard, particularly drawn to no. 13 with the Gnats, it's really well composed.

I must try and get to Duxford some day.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

Many thanks, my favourite was the Jubilee show, the late afternoon light helping out tremendously.

If you do make it Gordon, get there early and try and do as much of the museums as you can too. I know you don't mind a long day every now and then!

Quite true. Unfortunately all my Duxford F-15 shots are rather dire to put it politely!

A superb set of 58 Duxford aero images, skilfully captured by Dr Cake between 2012 and 2015.
