Andrews AFB air show 2017

Post by shaggy101 »

This will be the first of many from the trip to the USA I made a couple of weeks ago. It started with the Andrews AFB air show which was a great start, some really cool surprises on the day made for an excellent show. These included an impromptu show from a B-2 & Lockheed T-50 & a departure from an AC-130J which I'd never seen before. Just a shame the first half of the show was backlit really with the sun moving round in the afternoon but cloud cover increasing. We did a little spotting a couple of days after as well which I'll post in this thread as well, we didn't see an awful lot unfortunately though.

Ah, good ol' Andrews. Used to be an annual pilgrimage for me, but I stopped going a few years after they started shuttling spectators from offsite. I keenly recall struggling with that early-morning light that seemed to linger out in front forever, and always when the more interesting or unusual kit was displaying (the Harrier, which used to be a perennial participant, always seemed to go up early). Shame you had to deal with that godawful backlighting for the B-2 and T-50. Good to see 'em, though! Did the T-50 do much of a display?

I also remember when that static ramp was jam-packed; there were years when I'd count seven or eight Herc variants, an equal number of T-38s, every type of heavy in the services' inventories; they even had two B-52s one year and two KC-10s another. Looks a little sparse these days, but good to see they're still drawing some quality items. The Nellis Lancer is a nice catch; not seen one of those before!

I really like the B-17 shot, and the first of the Raptor images works really well despite the backlighting!

The T-50 didn't do much, a couple of passes quite high up & that was it. Was still good to see though. The static was fairly sparse & full of people mainly because they still do the parking offsite, at the home of the Redskins, & the bus drivers had no idea where they were going, took us nearly an hour to get there. I was very surprised to see the Nellis B-1 as I didn't even know they were based there.

They're not, the B-1 is based at Dyess and is opertaed by the 77th WPS which is part of the Nellis based 57th Wing.

Great set of photos, the T-38 is just a lovely looking thing isn't it?

Anyone else think that the T-50 borrows more than a little bit from the F-16? In looks at least, if not avionics!

Great set love the UH-1's the most. I remember getting very excited by seeing the Golden Knights C-31 at Vegas one day, lovely machine.
