VC-10 XV104 "Speed Queen" retires

Postby DamienB on Wed 04 Jul 2012, 7:25 pm

Yet another VC-10 leaves the RAF fleet - just 10 days short of her 45th birthday. Delivered to Bruntingthorpe, she'll be spares recovered and eventually scrapped.

And this is why she's "Speed Queen"!

I have many happy memories of working as an Airframe Tech on 104 during my time at Brize in the 90's. I remember we nearly lost her in a ground pressurisation test incident when a valve stuck one wet winters night. Close shave!

Brings a lump to my throat to see the 10 fleet being cut up for dog food tins.

I have always thought the VC10 to be one of the most elegant and graceful aircraft, and you first photo perfectly captures it for me.

Thank you for sharing these.

It's a shame it's gone, and a shame we didn't get a roller at RIAT. Nice thought for the flyby though.
