Space Shuttle Discovery Landing(Updated Pictures Pg. 2)

I had the amazing opportunity to shoot the Shuttle landing yesterday at Edwards AFB. It was tough to not put down the equipment and just enjoy the moment. What an experience!!

At first glance I thought my images were appearing oversharpened and the contrast was wrong but then I realized it was from how dirty and beat up the orbiter is after the rigors of re-entry.

Lovely set and you were so lucky to get so close!

I managed to see Atlantis return to KSC in April 2002 but obviously wasn't as close as this. What really stood out was the sonic boom and being able to see the shuttle from about 65,000 feet and spiral all the way down very quickly!

When the shuttle takes off you have to be a certain number of miles away....does this not apply to the landing as I thought that the craft still gave off some nasty stuff even on landing...you can shoot me if im being thick...

Quick question - the first pic has the gear tucked away, which suggests they must drop the gear VERY late? They don't do a run and break, do they?

Deployed at around 300 feet which does seem hellishly late...

The orbiter needs to slow to around 260mph for gear extension I believe and she touches down at around 210mph.
