NAS Whiting Field-Home of TAW-5. 25th Feb 2010

Post by Arno 01 »

During our family holiday, we were very lucky to get a photo shoot visit to NAS Whiting Field, many thanks to Mark for the information on setting this up and also to Jay, from the base public affairs office, for moving mountains to enable our visit to happen.
Whiting Field is home to over 150 T-34c Turbo Mentor's and 120 TH-57b/c Sea Ranger's and has also started taking delivery of the new T-6B's with HUD and all glass cockpit.
The base is made up of two airfields, North and South, with over 500 flights per day, 1.5 million take off's and landings each year, makes NAS Whiting Field the busiest Naval air complex in the world, accounting for 11% of all Navy and marine flight hours world wide. During normal ops, an aircraft takes off or lands every 8 seconds
We started with a walk along the Helicopter ramps and then a visit to the Helicopter Tower

We then moved to the fixed wing airfield, via the storage area, where the following four were sitting in the sun:

Then onto the fixed wing ramps:

New Kids on the block, 5 present during our visit:

Then we went out to shoot the gate guards:

Then into the Atrium, where these two were hiding:

And finally, by the base Gym, is this rather nice CH-46, the previous Base Commanding Officer served on this unit and when he heard that one was spare, he got it repainted in his old units markings

Any C+C welcome, many thanks again to Jay and Mark  :yahoo:

Hi Kev,

Great shots ,all of them , beautiful weather too!
Glad you had a good visit , Jay seems to have done you proud ; we missed the 2 in the Atrium.
Nice to see the new T-6's are painted red/white instead of the blue/white of the Pensacola and USAF machines.
The YT-2 was preserved next to the CH-46 on our visit last summer , wonder why they put it on the storage ramp?
The F-18 has moved across from Pensacola , it was stored on the museum ramp.

Cheers,

Mark
