Cool as!

What's the story behind this then? I am resisting the obvious joke about visiting Manchester and getting your paint nicked.

The second shot is a peach. I'm also intrigued to know what the story with this was!

Cheers for the comments lads.

It came to MAN to have its paint stripped for a C - check at Cambridge. (which is where it departed to)

Good stuff Charles, #2 is superb. Coming back to MAN for painting after the checks?

From Wikipedia:
'C Check

This is performed approximately every 15–21 months or a specific amount of actual Flight Hours (FH) as defined by the manufacturer. This maintenance check is more extensive than a B Check, as pretty much the whole aircraft is inspected. This check puts the aircraft out of service and until it is completed, the aircraft must not leave the maintenance site. It also requires more space than A and B Checks - usually a hangar at a maintenance base. The time needed to complete such a check is generally 1-2 weeks. The schedule of occurrence has many factors and components as has been described, and thus varies by aircraft category and type.'

Fantastic pics! Love the climb out one

The "Three hedded ulcer" has a terrible reputation for corrosion so getting all the paint off will help in the inspections for this. Also They have had quite a few paint jobs since joining the airforce. I don't suppose that they would have stripped them down to bare metal each time they re painted them so removing the lot will save some weight.

I guess one of the reasona the 1011 was removed from airline service was because of the lack of doors compared to the amount of passengers. Plus it's safety record

Was it that bad? I'm no expert - but wasn't it the DC-10 that took all the flak from the press - and there's still a few of them in service?

Lots more fatalities and hull loss from the DC-10, so yes. Still a fair amount for the 1011 though

As of August 2008, the L-1011 was involved in 56 incidents, including 11 hull-loss accidents, with 534 fatalities.
As of February 2011, the DC-10 was involved in 56 incidents, including 31 hull-loss accidents, with 1,261 fatalities.

Most in service now are the MD-11 which is only slightly better
As of November 2010, the MD-11 has been involved in 13 incidents, including eight hull-loss accidents, with 235 fatalities.

I was wondering what the story behind this was, and I log on the board and all is anwsered!
Was in the viewing park that afternoon myself for my first visit (orange BMW bike) and got wet too!

Great photos, the spray certainly makes the shot!

very unusual to see any airframe fly without a coat of primer or other quick remove finish, even for a short trip.
