RAAF Amberley

RAAF Amberley

Postby RichardE on Tue 26 Jun 2012, 1:26 am

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here in a long time, only picked up the camera a few weeks ago for the first time in over 12 months. So if anyone has any comments please be gentle as I am delicate . I have looked in here every now & again to depress myself looking at the variety of aircraft & amazng locations you have access to.

The first images are of the departure of 2 USN P8s overnighted at Amberley enroute to RAAF Pearce, Western Australia to exercise with the Royal Australian Navy. Unfortunately their departure was under low cloud & light rain. One returned last week & departed in brilliant sunshine, but I managed to miss it, just my luck. The photos I got of them aren't great but as far as I am aware they are the first images taken of the P8s in Australia. The remaining shots are of regular movements at Amberley over the last couple of weeks. Hopefully there is something here to interest someone.

Richard

Excellent to see, thanks for sharing! Good to see JA-956 again, it was in Britain on exercise in April.

Very nice to see some rarer birds. I like the Wedgetail especially. How many of these are the RAAF flying.

Shame it's no longer a haunt of the '111!

Lovely stuff!

I hope to be at Amberley around October, is it an easy base to photograph aircraft at?

@ Dan, I believe the RAAF are buying 6, with A30-005 currently in RAF Waddington for the show, seems there is 1 airframe still to be delived?

Thanks for the comments guys much appreciated. Dan, there will be 6 Wedgetails eventually, operated by No 2 Squadron at RAAF Williamtown. A30-005 has just taken part in Red Flag Alaska. Is good to see an Aussie presence for Waddington.

Red Dragon, Amberley isn't a great base for taking photos. Depending on what runway is in use any approach shots are limited. Also security has a much greater presence now, possibly due to the amount of aircraft on base compared to when the F-111s were in service. It is illegal in Australia to take photos of any buildings on a base. The Security Police will quite possibly have a chat with you if they think that might be a possibility. Also there are days when nothing moves at all, it can be just pure luck on some times, with nothing on weekends. If you would like any more info send me a PM.

Cheers,

Richard

I saw a report at the weekend stating that A30-006 has been delivered to the RAAF last week.
