A-10 live fire - Barry M Goldwater Range

Post by SorenAugustesen »

Hi

In January I was lucky enough to visit the Barry M Goldwater live fire range in Arizona. There were two A-10's from DM making several strafing passes at the targets.

The sound of an A-10 strafing is awesome, but not something you want to hear if you are on the receiving end of the shells!

C & C welcome

Fabulous pictures; all that action frozen in time. I've been lucky enough to witness A-10 live firing at an army range near Warminster. My daughter was in the ATC, and I was co-opted to provide some transport for a group of cadets to visit a "Live Firing Demonstration". We were all installed in a natural amphitheatre (along with a couple of hundred army bods), with just about every piece of British firepower laid out in front of us. After witnessing SA-80, sniper fire (impressively taking down a target at 1.5km range), claymore mines, Scorpions, MBT's, Lynx helicopters firing TOW's, etc., we were told that two Harriers were coming from behind to fire rockets, followed by two A-10's. Spectacular can't describe it. The A-10 gun sounds like when you rip material, but 1000 times louder. The aircraft are visually slowed down when the gun is firing; it's incredibly impressive. That was in '91/'92, but the memory lives like it was yesterday.

Pic 3, is that a watermark on your pic, or something to do with the shockwave from the gun firing?

Just had to have another look, a few of them photos you can see the rounds in the air just in front of the aircraft! These have to be the best A-10 photos I've ever seen?
