Middle Wallop 22nd July

Postby Disaster Area on Sun 23 Jul 2017, 10:02 am

It was Families Day at the home of the Army Air Corp, Middle Wallop yesterday. Although the day consisted mainly of flying Families of serving personnel we were treated to a display from the Apache Helicopter Display Team, complete with Pyros!

I'll just leave the one image here that really sums the display up but there are more on my Flickr should you be interested!

This might just be one of, if not the best photos of the Apache team in front of the wall of fire that I've seen!

Different weeks, Paul. It's shortlisted for Week 30, which I need to sort out later...

Cheers Dan, I wrongly assumed that as its dated earlier than the last published POTW, it had been passed by. Thanks for clarifying

Fantastic image extremely jealous my shots of this come no where near this quality.

Dare I ask, Middle Wallop bi-annual airshow, when did that stop and I'm sure there's no chance of it being started up again -think I went to one in the early 90's with the vast array of helicopters displaying, chances of us doing something like that again these days must be nil given the number of defence cuts obviously.

Being almost a local I used to go to all the Middle Wallop shows. Don't think that there's been a major show there recently, but if there has I must have somehow missed it? The massed helicopter approach was something else, that's for sure!

2000 was the public last event there I believe. Well, until earlier this year that is

Would love to do something on a larger scale, perhaps in the future. Assuming we have any helicopters left! :lmao:

There was a nice public fly-in event (with a small flying element too) in 2012 for the RFC 100th Anniversary hosted by the Museum of Army Flying.

When I visited MW for a base tour this year they said they simply don't have the personnel and funds for a large scale show. Remember they only have 1 Apache Squadron, 1 Gazelle Squadron, 1 Squirrel/Bell 212 squadron, a flight of Tutors, and a development squadron we were not allowed to see. On that visit we saw about 65 helicopters of which about 40 were airworthy. Back in the 80's/90's they could probably muster 150 airworthy helicopters including those from Netheravon.
