Iruma Airbase, Japan 27/11/2018

While I was in Japan we were able to spend the afternoon at the JASDF base in Iruma, we were blessed with glorious sunshine after a cold and grey morning. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see any heavy transports, but we did get a few other aircraft types - though mainly T-4s!

Here's a selection....

May as well start with the Kawasaki T-4s

We were also lucky enough to get a CH-47 pilot practicing his close in manoeuvering.

and a nice little wave

The highlights for me though were the EC-1 and YS-11EB

Those Chinook shots are incredible, bud. The subject, the colours, the rarety, the light, the composition...

Y'know, they might be amongst my favourite photos of a Chinook I've seen. Certainly for a number of years.

The EC-1 has got to be one of the most beautifully ugly aircraft out there.

Cracking shots Nick.

Thanks Tom, it was certainly a bonus that we weren't expecting, it was hard to go wrong photography wise - great light, autumnal colours, and a camo Chinook!

Thanks, it's certainly not a looker, but it's also not grey - so that's a thumbs up in my book.

Damn, cracking shots!
Chinook pics are outstanding! Wish I was so lucky in Gifu and Hyakuri... we had bad luck seeing only few machines per day...

Thanks Tom

I'm surprised you didn't have much luck at Hyakuri, it seemed like a fairly active air base while we were there?

Yeah... being there 2 days we had only 5-6 Phantom movements a day and few T-4s...

Got to say that for anyone who complains about the 7DII, these show what the camera and decent lens can do. Great clarity helped by some very nice lighting conditions. We had a lot more haze and also overcast with some rain. We had a day at Hyakuri with no Phantoms at all due to lightning in their operating area.
