I can't believe that Jumbojet hasn't started this thread but I'll go for a different angle.

After two almost identical years what DON'T you want to see at Cosford next year? :clown:

I wouldn't mind having spot outside again, for some reason my ISO rocketed up to 1600, and all my shots were as grainy as wholemeal bread

Vulcan, obviously MUST be there, but we really DON'T want an otherwise mirror-image of the displays of the last two years. Try for some overseas participation - military or civil, the more rare classic jets (thinking Sabre, Meteor and Sea Vixen here) and perhaps a "signature moment" for the show, namely an appropriate formation with a couple of the display items...

Cosford rests on its laurels due to the huge crowds it gets every year. The line-ups might please the local daytrippers, but plenty of enthusiasts give the show a wide berth because of the lack of variety.

10 years ago, in 1999 NATO commemorated their 50th Anniversary, and what did we get - Frecce, PDF, RJ Falcons, RNLAF PC7, RNLAF Apache, RNLAF Bo 105 and Luftwaffe Tornado pair.

Can we attract the same for NATOs Diamond Anniversary - heres hoping. If Duxford can get PDF surely Cosford can, its a military base

Well with Cosford on 14th June 09,
Kemble on 21st June 09,
Biggin Hill on 27th/ 28th June 09,
Waddington on 4th/ 5th July,
RIAT on18th/ 19th July
I would like to think that Cosford would be able to attract some international visitor/s that were maybe coming over for other shows during June 2009.

We'd all like to think that for sure. I just hope the committee realise that the show needs to progress and make some changes this time round. How about some more helos in static (especially from Shawbury!), how about moving all the burger vans off the crowdline a bit, how about positioning their unique static aircraft a little more carefully and how about taking a good look at that participation list...................

I've never been to Cosford, but one thing I'd be interested to know from regulars at the show is this - does extra interest necessarily have to be "international"?

There's plenty of resources (not necessarily military either) which, if used creatively, could make an impact for the general public and create interest for enthusiasts alike. Some of the best airshows at the moment use resources in an imaginative way - eg different formations, unusual combos etc.

For example...
Russian Revelation - Antonov An-2 in formation with 6 Yaks (Aerostars)
Battle of Britain Scramble - Spits & Hurries fending off two 108s (something done regularly at Shoreham)
Vietnam War Scenario - T28, Skyraider, Bronco, UH-1H Huey set-piece
"Miami Vice" set piece - Hughes 500 duel with car on the runway

Ok, a couple of these might be a bit 'out there', but that's the sort of thing you get with an over-active imagination

Mark

You're absolutely right - as an RAF show it doesn't have to be international at all, and I'm sure the flying committee and events team are far more concerned with home participation, and they do get the full monty where the RAF is concerned. When the main aims are recruitment and engagement then what difference does a Dutch F-16, for example, make - none!

For the enthusiast some international participation would be great, but that's not the aim of the show naturally. They do need to try and be a little more creative however - I agree completely.

Some realistic ideas for Cosford 2009:

British based helicopters on static:

RAF Chinook
RAF Merlin
RAF Puma
RAF Agusta 109
RAF Sea King
DHFS Griffin
Army Squirrel
AAC Lynx
AAC Apache
Navy Merlin
Navy Lynx

A few fixed wing that can land at Cosford:

RAF Harriers
RAF King Air
RAF Tuccano
Navy Jetstream
AAC Islander

And maybe if they're lucky they could pull:

Dutch Griffin
Dutch NH-90
Belgium A109
German CH-53

And maybe a couple of European based Helicopters...

What do you guys think?

I'd argue that a single Dutch F-16 display is more likely to excite a youngster and get them interested in a career in the RAF than a dozen Tucano or Tutor displays, superbly flown though they undoubtedly are! Noise, raw power and spectacle are what attracted me to aviation...

Maybe a bad example Dan - but you get my drift I hope. From an RAF perspective, foreign participation does little for them directly. If you attract more "enthusiasts" you're only preaching to the converted.

LBS, Whats the big assumption? That there will be a role demo in 2009? Or that changes may be made to the role demo?

It would be great too see some different aircraft in the RAF role demo as variety is the spice of life! The aircraft and crews in the 2008 role demo have done a great job and done the RAF proud. We must understand that changes depend on aircraft type availability and serviceability, but it would be great too see some different types in the role demo for 2009!

LBS, Thank you for the Role Demo 2008 and we look forward to 2009!
