IAT 1985

IAT 1985

Postby fg1 on Mon 24 Aug 2009, 6:51 pm

I've just found my old photo album in the attic and thought I'd have a go at scanning some of the images that I took way back at IAT 85 . It was my first tattoo and I was gobsmacked from start to finish. The photos were taken with a Praktica MTL 3 I think, okish in the sunshine, poor if a cloud appeared!

First the F4s.

Yes - it does make you reach for the whisky when you think of the ghosts of airshows past. What I would give for a DSLR that also converts into a time machine. Are you listening Canon?

What a great set of photographs. I keep thinking "not so long ago". This period (eighties) was the height of my childhood love of all things aviation, particularly military. The lineup of F4's really does speak of a different era.

Superb shot's.......It was also my first Tattoo at the age of 12! I'd love to know where my photo's ended up although, they were only taken on a 110 cartridge camera.

Certainly was great era - can remember this like yesterday. Think it was the Sky Tanker meet headed up by a charcoal grey KC-10 (who can remember those?). Nigel (aka Wexham Mackem) ran a series of threads on the old IATs on the old forum with some great shots.

Not wanting to detract from the shots, I think the Raven and one of the Viking shots were from Mildenhall judging from the back drop

Great memories all the same

 aaahh those were the days, it was MY first Tattoo and I can still feel the excitement of the Sunday as if it was yesterday. Prior to this I had only been to the local Cosford Airshows so it was a real eye opener to a plane mad lad of 15!! I remember being stuck in traffic at the Whelford end peering through the overcast gloom at the runway lights just as the Victor came right overhead into land!! Thanks for the memories - I took some snaps with a Kodak Disc camera - which was appalling!

Looking at them now I think you're right. That would make those shots from Mildenhall 84 I think.

Nice post FG-1. The first thing that's strikes you looking back at pics of the IAT 85 static park is litter. My shots are the same, there's maountains of it.

Nigel (aka Wexham Mackem) ran a series of threads on the old IATs on the old forum with some great shots.

I might have a repeat run in the winter Darren, there are a load of new members since those days that might have some more to chuck in. There are a handful from 85 in my PB so must've posted these quite recently, just can't remember why. Anyhow...

Guess you weren't using a Praktica then?
Thanks for posting a lovely shot of XV215. I remember going for a jolly in this aircraft around the Lakes when I was an air cadet.

Hi,

Super shots.
Super memories.

My First IAT, and without a camera in those days.
So the pictures bring back some deep memoires.
Line-ups of F-4’s F-104’s and 13 KC-135 I believe.

Great.

Great pictures lads!

Brought back many memories of my first year working as an IAT volunteer.

I'm just out of shot to the right in the picture of Hercules XV215. That's the Green Incident Response team vehicles in the background. I was the Red Incident Commander's driver at the other end of the hangar.

On the Sunday evening as most folks were in the queues to get to the gates - I was fortunate to blag 4 minutes flying time in the Emergency Services Wessex HU.5 XS482 from Boscombe Down.

Did anyone get a shot of me airborne? Must have been about 1900hrs.

Here's two poor scans from my collection...

Image

Not the sharpest of shots - but excusable I suppose - given the low light, slow shutter speed, general vibration and the heat-haze from the exhaust stub in front of the door!

Oh for a digital back then...

I'm really liking this thread, brings back so many memories. Best shot for me is the Super Etendard plugged in to the Etendard IV, from a time when that was still allowed at airshows!
