*Warning - Photobucket Users*

Postby Russ on Thu 06 Aug 2009, 7:07 pm

We've recently noticed a large number of images posted on UKAR that are severely compressed, with image sized reduced to as little as 30-90kb each. It appears that images hosted on Photobucket are the problem. With further investigation it seems using anything other than the 'old uploader' to upload may well result in compression. The 'bulk uploader' function appears to be the main culprit. Please be mindful of this when using Photobucket. It is a great shame to see the quality of great images by UKAR Members downgraded by compression.

I was just trying a few different uploads on photobucket, to start with even the old uploader reduced images that were around 150kb to around 40kb as did the other different uploading options. It now seems to be ok on all the options for me, the only thing i did was change the reduce image size from 1024x768 to 800x600 to suit the pic's i was uploading. I normally leave it set to 1024x768.
I wonder if anyone else is still having the problems.

Not seeing the "old uploader" as an option now?

Won't be using PB any longer if this is the case.

From what I gather on the upload page, the "old uploader" function has gone and accounts are being limited to 1Mb worth of storage space.

From Wikipedia so could be a load of tosh
Photobucket offers 500MB free storage (was 1 GB, but they lowered it to 500mb 19-AUG-2009). This reduction of storage space frustrated users, who were locked out of adding new images to their accounts unless they agreed to pay the upgrade fee.

Is there anything to stop people just creating a second account to get more upload space?

EDIT: Just had a go....as long as you use a different email address you can have as many accounts as you like....and you can have as many email addresses as you like from Hotmail.......result :P

I've now got 500Mb storage on my account. Last night I uploaded 2 sub-250Kb images and the "Account storage used" box said 0.43MB (43%) which lead me to believe that all accounts were limited to 1Mb of storage.

Sorry about that!

Martin

Mine says it's a 500MB account now, and nearly half full

Interestingly, yesterdays uploads using the only available uploader don't appear to have reduced my images in size...

I've got 3 seperate accounts under different user names, but I am getting really annoyed with this lot and am looking at finding a different host site. Photobucket has really gone downhill over the last year.

Just a bit more info, I've discovered.

- If your Photobucket account is relatively full, you're more likely to have images compressed. So worth cleaning it out from time-to-time.

- Old Albums are compressed. For example, my Abingdon shots from back in May have been compressed down to around 40kb per shot.

Photobucket are making it much harder for us to use their site, I think I'm going to look into a new image host, maybe Flickr or Image shack.

I've used flickr for about 18months and can't fault it; although it remains to be seen whether the yahoo/microsoft deal will have any affect on Flickr.

Flickr has the extra added advantage of that you can organise your photos on there for people to see directly as well as where you post them. It's pretty much an online portfolio. Admittedly if you want to have more than 200 photos showing you do have to pay, but it's not too pricey and well worth it.

I've always used PB to post and I haven't had any problems (or at least no-one has said anything  )but then again I use FastStone resizer to compress my images and then I upload them

Is it just me, but looking at the "Post your Flickr" thread and it just hits me as the most boring layout for exhibiting your photos. Yes the images look fine, but thats not everything, I much prefer to pay a small fee and use a site such as PBase or Zenfolio, but the again I don't seem to have an issue with PB.

Just my observations.

I use fotopic for hosting, and i think I have got around the compression problem when posting on UKAR
also with the free account you get 250mb space, the thing I like about it is the way you have control over the layout.
example from fotopic > UKAR
