In the jungle - exercise COLBRA III, July 2009

Post by Operti »

Dear fellows,

After a long time away from the community, I decided to make a move and bring to you a few snapshots from down south.

To start, some views of COLBRA III, a joint exercise between the Brazilian Air Force and Colombian Air Force, that took place between the cities of Leticia (Colombia) and Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira (Brasil). Covered for the printed version of ASAS magazine (http://www.revistaasas.com.br) that reached the streets in august 2009.

Excellent to see some Latin American items, and fine captures of them at that. The Super Tucano looks quite menacing in both the Brazilian and Colombian schemes. Love the angle on the 2nd Blackhawk, which I might guess belongs to Colombia?

Great post, Super Tucano's for the RAF please! The Blackhawk looks to me like a Brazillian example, can just make out an 'FAB' serial on the first shot.

Thank you guys.

Both BH shots are from the same helo, Brazilian Air Force FAB8906 from Harpia squadron, and were taken in São Gabriel. It was the SAR unity, along with a SC-95 Bandeirante SAR from Pelicano squadron (proud winner of the best colour scheme at RIAT'09   ). The most boring role in the exercise, they didn't fly the entire week (thank God!).
I took a few shots of the Colombian BH involved in the exercise, in Leticia, but they are just ok.
All pictures were made with a Nikon D70 and 18-70mm & 70-300mm ED lenses, and I was aboard the C-98 when taking the A2A photos.

Chef,

I think it was about 5k ft. I don't have my notes in hand, but there were specifics altitudes for the targets to fly. The main objective of the exercise was improve the procedures of transfering a target from one country to the other by its respectives air defense control centers. I mean: when a Brazilian Air Force plane couldn't reach an illegal flight before it gets through the border, our air defense control might warn the Colombian authorities about this traffic so they could take the necessary measures to intercept it inside the Colombian air space, the same thing happening in the opposite way. The interceptions per se were just a "plus" for the exercise, and both countries had one plane to play the role of targets (both were Caravans, and ours was the one in the picture), simulating drug planes (the most common kind of illegal traffic on that region), crossing from one country to the other twice a day, three days in a row, and being intercepted by "friends" in the way in and "brothers" in the way back. When the weather helped, of course.

Arno,

Thank you, I'll try to post more regularly. Meanwhile, a glimpse of cammos that will never come back

That SEA pattern was my favorite for the Brazilian Air Force's F-5.

And two little Tucs over Rio

Those were taken with film, in 2003 (Tucs) and 2005 (F-5).
