Fairford 1985- Smoking BUFFs

Post by docman »

Late Spring 1985 saw a deployment of B-52s in Gloucestershire. My initial visit was marred by my telephoto lens falling apart. For my second visit a few days later the sun appeared and the grass had been cut! If one timed the take-off and landing cycles well a quick pint in the Red Lion at Lechlade was possible. Was it nearly 25 years ago?

Lovely stuff - never tire of seeing B-52s in the '80s.

Wouldn't it be nice if KC-135s were still like that, too!

Looks like may 85 to me, I went down there four times to see them, I love the old colour scheme they were in, as for the smoking tankers, ah those were the days !!! Wish I had got digi camera kit back then,
many thanks for posting these,
Rob

I have a faint recolection of going down to have a look at these. Seem to remember there was a detachment of USAF or ANG Herc's at Benson at the same time.

Used to remember them over the school in Leominster looking like that, wish I had gone to see this deployment in that scheme. Fabulous

Unfortunately all the USAF Buffs I've seen close up were either in that very dark lizard scheme or in the current greys.

Great post thanks.

Great to see these pic's from the wonderful 80's, thanks for posting. I cine filmed/video'd every B-52 deployment to Fairford which started off with 3 7BW B-52D's in June'80 - the D model made a fantastic sound during take off!The 2BW deployment was the 5th B-52 deployment to Fairford and comprised of the following 7 G's : 76469,506,512,519, 80210, 92586 and 599.
To give some of the younger readers an idea of how good it used to be and commencing in 1967,this was the 33rd B-52 deployment to England which includes those taking part in the RAF Bombing Competition at RAF Marham - what great days they were!
