Farnborough '50-'59 Discovered slides
Farnborough '50-'59 Discovered slides
Hi Everyone.
Myself and my sisters have recently been going through my late grandfathers slide collection. Much to my delight i discovered a small collection of pictures labelled "Farnborough 1950 -59".
My grandfather used to work for DeHavilland at Hatfield in the engine department as foreman, and later with rolls royce at Leavesden. Here is a small selection of some of the pics i've found, i'll post some more if anyones interested

It does, and its also the first Farnborough pic I've seen with aircraft parked in that way: lined up on the edge of the runway. Going on the shadows it's an early morning shot, so presume the jets are lined up there ready to be towed off before the start of the flying? And the helis are arriving, rather than displaying?
Re: Farnborough '50-'59 Discovered slides
Simply breathtaking. Both in subject and quality of slides.
I think we all want to see more.....actually, scan the lot!

Thanks for posting these, I love the third shot with the Belvedere in formation with a Wessex and Whirlwind!
Edit - I've just seen the Lincoln behind the Comet too! Is that the turbojet Testbed?

Is that a Lincoln, or PA474 in shot number 5? I seem to recall reading about a vertical fin being mounted on the upper fuselage at one point?
Just going off the engines, I'd say it was a Lincoln

What a fantastic collection of images from the days when factories up and down the land were churning out aircraft.

The Lincoln is G-APRJ, which some may remember was at the Southend Historic Aircraft Museum.
Carefree days indeed, lack of crowdlines and Hi Viz. But then, how many people go to airshows in suits these days?
Maybe it's because people were allowed to exercise their common sense?

Oh sweet lordy fantastic selection and nicely shot too. More more more....
I would say Paul that most of those are far side - on the secondary runway. I note what you say re sun position but I'd wager that pic 3 has been scanned the wrong way round - look at the "Bucanneer"writing - its sloping the wrong way.. Also most of the a/c are seen taxying out to display with the crowd and exhibition tents etc in the correct position.

Re: Farnborough '50-'59 Discovered slides
A wonderfully colourful selection of a bygone age of British aviation. Photographers at the time were usually limited by cost to black and white and to see these looking so fresh is a real treat. Looks like Quintin Hogg (later Lord Hailsham,) who was the First Lord of the Admiralty, squinting (see what I did there?) at the camera in shot #27.
I also remember seeing that Lincoln at Southend - at the time of the photo I believe it was operated by Napiers as an engine test bed and icing rig.
Many thanks for posting them.
