Brunty doesn't get rained on - May Open Day 2010

Post by DamienB »

Cancellations at Brunty's first open day this year included the BBMF Lancaster (grounded by crosswinds), the Nimrod (not allowed to run by the RAF of all people) and Torrential Rain (which, despite being a regular favourite, happily turned up on the wrong day for once).

Beech Restorations were showing off their shiny Beech, getting ever nearer to flight - just the electrics to sort out now:

A new arrival from Lasham ups the count of Starfighters on the airfield to 2:

Image

Given the state Hunter XL565 was in on arrival from Kemble in 2002, this was a particularly welcome sight - she's nearly ready to take part in taxi runs herself:

Image

First (and last) run of the day was from the Comet, which is shortly to go into the hangar for a much-needed repaint:

Rolled out a week or so ago was the Victor, now resplendent in a somewhat pink shade of Hemp... should fade to the right colour though!

Don't expect to ever see a repeat of last year's flight!

After an earlier starting issue, the ex-Swiss Hunter was run later in the day:

The Sea Vixen carried out a wing fold demo and a single engine was run in the afternoon too. Hopefully some taxiing from this beast next year!

I had forgotten just how totally awesome the Lightning was at close range. What a fabulous aircraft!

The Canberra boys did their bit to increase the UK's carbon footprint nicely:

Lovely set of a place I would extremely like to visit. Particularly like the Comet shots.

Buccaneer XX900 wasn't taxiable but was carrying out regular demos of its wing fold, bomb bay, air brake and arrestor hook.

So it the RN Buccaneer in the limelight this year, with XX894 taking to the runway for a similar sequence of systems demos plus several taxi runs:

As mentioned before, the Nimrod was sadly limited to static display. Hopefully she'll be running at the next open day.

Overall a fantastic day out, one of the best open days at Brunty for some time. Thank gawd for sunshine!

Nice set.

Any plans for the F-104s to taxi in future...?

As the Right Hand Seater on the the Victor today, I can assure you the throttles have not been barred. Don't know who started spreading that one!!

Glad to hear it '231, we want as much noise as possible! Great shots Damien; the front 3/4 Victor is my favourite.

Is there any specific reason why Hunter XL565 is wearing her tanks on the outboard pylons, is that how they were fitted in Aden?
It is not a criticism, it just looks a bit different. The choice of markings though is just like the images, top drawer.

Commentator said one is moving to a new home and made an appeal for an engine for the second.

The runs seemed a bit tame this year, crosswinds ?

Afraid so, the crosswind meant that we were not able to stream the chute so we couldn't go as fast as normal. If the chute is streamed in a crosswind like that there is a chance that when it deploys it could damage the chute doors..and we don't want that!
