Jubilee garden etiquette

Jubilee garden etiquette

Postby luke on Fri 18 Jun 2010, 10:54 am

Got my GA and Jubilee garden tickets for both days now and am starting to get excited!
Last year I was not in an enclosure so this is my first time in a seated area.

How mercenary are people with the deckchairs?
For example if I get one near the front (or anywhere for that matter) would it be reasonably safe to be able to leave my bag there and either go to the loo or out of the enclosure for some food and expect to still find it there? Or is it dead mand shoes when it comes to seating?

I don't mind either way but just want to know what to expect so I am not surprised if my seat vanishes a millisecond after I get up!

I have enjoyed the Jubilee garden for about the last 12 years or so and attend on my own. I have never had a problem with leaving my kit near the chair for a fairly short period of time. If you are gone for a longer period and someone reports it, it would be the same as stray baggage left anywhere on the airfield and may attract some attention.

Cheers,

Jubilee Gardens are fantastic and can assure you that you will not be getting your bag nicked or anything like that =)

This is my first year in the Jubilee Garden as well and I was wondering the other day if being a seated enclosure it is frowned upon if people stand up for certain displays. I do sit most of the time but for some displays I like to stand and I wouldnt want to go annoying anyone.

Most people stand up or sit down as they please. When a popular item starts to display, most people in the enclosure will be stood up anyway. This is not like a grandstand. You will not have a uninterrupted view of the runway unless you are at the very front but you will have more space around you to do as you please.

My first time in last year and it was great, people do tend to stand and move to the front for the displays though. Of course you will get the usual low life at the front with step ladders as the organisers fail to enforce their own polices but on the whole it's less crowded and a much, much better experience.

I find that if you do get a step ladder near you just keep banging into it at key moments during the display, if the lack of quality photos doesn't put them off then falling 4' with their expensive kit soon will !

We were in the Jubilee Garden last year, and we're going back this year, I have nothing but good things to say about it! Unfortunately we arrived at around 0900 and by then most of the seats at the front were already taken, but that was'nt really much of a problem as you still get a very good view of the flying displays from further back. Nobody minds if you stand up during the displays. :)

Doing the Jubilee Gardens for the first time myself this year with my daughter. Does anyone know if there is an area in front of the deckchairs to stand or do they go right to the front of the enclosure? Aiming to be on the field at opening time (7am I think) and going straight to the garden to grab a seat. Do people book a seat for the day? Or is it stand up and somebody jumps on it
Either way we are looking forward to it now......

Last year there was a long line of deckchairs right in front of the rope, so no standing room for anyone except those sitting in them. The front row gets filled early though.

I'm bored enough that I just uploaded a photo from last year here if you want to see for yourself.

Just wanted to say thanks to all those selfish photographers who chose to ignore the signs and stood up in front of us near the front the jubilee gardens.
The main reason I paid around 50 quid for 2 tickets to get in there (plus the entrance fee), was so that my wife and I could spend a nice day in a deckchair watching planes, without having the view blocked by grumpy faced people pushing to the front trying to get thier precious photos. By the time the F22 was about to come on it got stupid, so me and the missus had to leave our seats and go to the back of the enclosure to get a decent view.
I think we'll give it a miss next year.

Apparently there was some very tiny small print at the bottom of the "please stay in your seat" signs that said "unless something like an F22, Typhoon or the Red Arrows are flying".

Unfortunately though once the first row of deck chairs have been occupied it's very difficult to get a good view of what's flying unless you are at the back of the enclosure.

I have to admit, I did stand up for the F22 and the Vulcan but only because otherwise I wouldnt have been able to see anything. I tried to stay in my seat as much as I could but those blokes at the front were ridiculous. They had no consideration for anybody else and I think were actually using the gardens because everyone else would be sat down leaving them a clear shot. I got my revenge though, I was on my way back from the bar just as the A400M was taking off and I intentionally stood in the way of one of the guys standing up so he couldnt get his shot. It was sweet.

Yes I do have to admit it was really annoying these people standing up right in front of you when I was sitting on the front row.

Also there were some really cheeky bar stewards also when I kindly told them they were blocking my view.

I will be making RIAT aware of this - but lets be honest - what can be done?

The aisles were far to wide - which just encouraged people to use that gap or bring chairs to the front?

May have second thoughts for there next year!

We were on the second row near the right hand side of the enclosure. It was fine when we got there, but after an hour or so people started standing at the front of the walkways and staying there. My missus is 6 months pregnant so for her standing to get a better view wasn't really an option. There was a guy with a leg in a cast at the end of our row and selfish gits were constantly standing right in front of him for a large part of the show. Bloody disgrace.

I also noticed some people picking up deck chairs and moving them to the walkways at the front.

At one point I did complain at the ticket office and they did say they would come down and ask people at the front to sit down, but they never did.

I used the Jubillee Garden on Sunday ( Yes I know i got the wrong day weatherwise  ) and apart from one steward who politely asked a few individuals not to stand in the aisleway during the morning, myself included, I was not aware of any problems. I certainly did not hear anybody complaining. As for sitting in your deckchair all day and not moving. For 10 hours?? Are you serious  If we had sat in those chairs all day we would all have crippling backache by now.

I did stand up for many an item and to make sure I did not obstruct the view, I moved to the extreme right of the fenceline where the last aisleway had no chairs behind and stood there with a couple of people who were more than accommodating ( thank you to the gentleman and his wife with the 2 big Nikons if you are reading) However there were a few at the very front row who decided that they had had enough of people walking back to their seat and so to annoy/obstruct or just pinch the ropeline  They moved their chairs right up to the rope. Quite silly if you ask me.

In general I thought the set up of the Jubillee Garden was excellent. The only complaint I have is related to the price of the food. Extortionate, but thats another thread.....

We used the garden on Sat., and it was lovely to have room to breathe.

Yes it was annoying when people stood up, but then the amount of people (myself included) falling through deckchairs more than made up for it on the entertainment front.

Our first time at RIAT and well worth the entrance fee.

I was sat quite near you (next block of seats up, same row) and yes it was getting a bit bloody annoying and not to mention inconsiderate towards some people who couldn't stand. For all I was one of the many snappers in that area I did at least make an effort to kneel or sit down if I was going right to the front, and then i'd generally retreat back to the seat once stuff was airborne.

Otherwise though its a very decent enclosure and one i'll continue to use again.

Like this thread. Seems its not just me who pays for a SEAT just to get cheesed off for those people who STAND and block the view.Question - Whatever happened to people power - If we are all fed up with the numptys who stand or crowd into the aisles with their own seats and deckchairs then lets make it known to them.Collectively we could make a difference or at least en-masse get some of the organisers to 'have a word'

However I do have to praise the Germans ( I think ) on Saturday on the front row who were sat down even when everyone around was falling over themselves to get to the crowdline for the Raptor. Well done boys - ( all wrapped in camouflage coversheets of same design ) proves our foreign friends have a lot to teach us.
