Park and View Questions

Park and View Questions

Postby sadlybrokeboy on Wed 17 Mar 2010, 11:32 am

Hi,

I'm aiming to go to the Departures Monday Park and View for the first time this year after years of threatening to go....and had a couple of questions - I've done some searching but couldn't find what I was after....

Firstly - was wondering where the best Park and View area was for departures? I've not done a Park and View before so would appreciate any hints...

Also - was curious to know if it's as busy as it sounds - do the majority of the aircraft leave on the Monday or is over a period of a couple of days?

There may be some other stupid questions to follow....sorry!

Cheers,

Matt

Yes, it's pretty busy. Almost all A/C will leave during the day, so 200+ movements. Go to P&V east for close views of taxiing A/C, or P&V west to see them airborne. Many would say it's the best day of the weekend!

1. There is a P&V at each end of the airfield (and FRIAT in the middle)... departures usually happen east to west so you will get flying shots from the west end of the airfield and taxi/burner shots from the east.

2. Extremely busy, if you pop to the loo you will miss atleast 2 departures most of the day!

Monday is an excellent day, simply because of the volume of movements as previously mentioned. Just be mindful of how depressing it is at the end though, with the airfield devoid of nearly every aircraft - short of the ones that have gone tech or "sensitive" USAF aircraft (F-22, U-2 and formerly F-117s) that usually depart on the Tuesday.

It is great, but having said that you've missed the great days when it was so busy that you didn't get kicked out until around 17.00. Now the airfield is nearly empty not long after lunchtime.

Burgers aside, the fry up van is one of the better ones. Excellent Bacon Rolls.

Sorry to dredge this up again!

Now that things are all starting to get a bit closer.....

What sort of time do the departures start on the Monday? What's a good time to get on base?

Cheers,

From the past few years I can remember Alex, it was only last year that they kicked everything out by about 1pm. The few years prior to that, stuff has still been leaving mid to late afternoon.

I'm sure last year I was in p&v west later then 1pm.

Planes start leaving on mass around 8-9 i think.

it just shows how much smaller RIAT is now if everything is out by 1pm, things were still departing at 5pm in the wonder years, with usually around 5 or so broken ones remaining!

Maybe you're right, but it's been generally a few straggers leaving later with long gap's in between.

I mean it was solid departures until 5pm or so with no long gaps back in the wonder years of the 90's, but RIAT is so much smaller now, more akin to a good year at Air Fete!

I'm hoping to get time off work to attend at least one of the arrivals days with my son. I've never attended a P and V before and having done a fair bit of searching with no success (thats not to say I've just simply missed the information) was wondering if anyone could advise, or point me in the direction of where I can find, what time they open/close and whether there is a busier day (I had wondered if planned arrivals lists exist and are posted anywhere but haven't found any).

I presume from comments earlier in this thread about the Monday departures that aircraft can also arrive very early.

Would it be a reasonable assumption to assume the larger aircraft for static display arrive earlier in the week ?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yep, seeing as the majority of the larger aircraft are American, they will tend to arrive on the Wednesday, with a few on Tuesday and the remainder on Thursday. The latter is by far the busiest day for arrivals though.

I don't know all this shameless promotion! it is great though to have so much choice as to where to view the flying display on the outside, one day inside is costing enough!

Hi there... You'd like our Park and View,, just 5 -10 minutes walk from the runway and perched in a grandstand position looking down onto it. You can see take off and landing, and also watch the display in comfort. We have hot and cold food, drinks as well as loos.
We tend to have mostly P and V, but with just a few campers. It only costs £10/car/day for Park and View. If you want to camp we appreciate a prior booking. Do check out www.furzeyhill.com - that way you can get an idea of where we are, there's a google map.

I think you'll find that the planes mostly leave on Monday, though some even leave on Sunday evening... but there is constant air traffic over the whole of next week.
Hope to see you,
you'd be very welcome,
yrs,

Looking at their map, they are north of the runway, and quite some way off. Can't see it being much good for serious photography. Perhaps they'd like to post a few examples?
