Airshow China 2010

Post by TLM »

Here are some pictures from the recent Airshow China. The event is held at Zhuhai Sanzao airport on the edge of the Pearl Sea coast. Despite challenging hazy photographic conditions, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will definately return again.

Although not the best quality, the last couple of pictures are reference to the strange and unfortunate story regarding the PLAAF FT-5 and FT-6.
They arrived a few days before I did and where advertised to fly everyday, along with a YAK-18. On the Friday I could see in the hazy distance, the technicians around the jets and I assumed they were being prepared for a flight. To our shock, in just a few hours they were reduced to scattered components and were later loaded onto an An-12 and IL-76. Nobody knew why!

The Monday saw some very nice surprises. Including the arrival of 3 IL-76s, 3 An-12s and a Tu-154. All in all a very enjoyable week with some very rare aircraft!

That JF-17 is beautiful.. in an ugly sort of way. Doesn't look like the conditions have hindered your images either, lovely stuff.

Fabulous stuff  . I love the look of those Thunders - deliciously outdated but still a modern looking jet, kind of like a 21st Century F5. Also liking the "Sikorsky Frelon"!

This is the best set Ive seen from Zhuhai this year. I really cant stand the JF-17, personally I think its one of the ugliest aircraft to ever grace the skies, the J-10 on the other hand is quite a good looking bird.

Sweet!
Really like the J-10 shots. The 2-seater looks better than the single for some reason.

Outstanding photos TLM from what looked like a stunning show you've caught the JF-17 beautifully.

I still insist that Farnborough deserves a shedload of abuse for the failed JF-17 debut, talk about sidelined.

Tim, Where did you stay and how did you organise accommodation and what did it cost? Thinking of going in 2012.

I stayed at the Maihao International Hotel in the city, just a few miles from the ferry terminal. It was suggested by the air show media team as an official hotel for the show that provided bus transportation to and from the event. Despite this journey taking 60-80 minutes, it was only 25RMB / £2 and was as frequent as every 15 minutes. The hotel rooms were £55 a night.

Tim,

I went with a tour group - but only on the public days.

It was part of a tour that included Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong as well as Zhuhai.

We stayed at the Silver Hotel in downtown Zhuhai - the journey in was OK, but getting back in the late afternoon was a nightmare with the airshow traffic.

Looking at some of your pics, it looks like you were on the south/eastern side of the runway with the sun behind you - we noticed a crowd over there.

Can I ask where it was and how you got over there ??? for future reference.

My trip report of the whole 14-day visit is here

A few of my photos from the show (not as sharp as yours  )......

Fabulous post, the H-6 and the Chinese "Frelons" are fantastic, but quality throughout.
