Farewell F-111 - You'll be missed.

Post by Jonesy »

It's kind of sad knowing that the F-111 isn't around anymore. I'm glad I managed to get a few shots of it during its twilight years with the RAAF.

Let's make this a tribute to the F-111 whether it be USAF or RAAF, so let's see your shots. I'll kick off with an Upper Heyford F-111E at RAF Brawdy airshow in the early 80's.

Excellent selection of great shots. Its a sad day indeed when aircraft we all admired in our youth are slipping away to the 'ole retirement revetment.

Can you post more, please!

Cheers,

Did the airframes find homes anywhere, or did they all stay in Oz?

Hi Jonesy wonderful set of this incredible airplane.
According to my information that I have, just four aircraft will be preserved, plus one more in RAAF Museum in Point Cook. The 17 remanent aircrafts will scrapped. Is very sad for me I never saw this plane by myself...

Jonesy great shots of the Aussie 'Varks.. The F-111 was a great aircraft.

The earliest shots here are from the 1981 display when the Thunderbirds arrived for their first UK display with the F16. Their display was such an anti-climax, after all the hype - but that's another story.

Again apologies for the quality as at this time I was using a Practika with Sigma lenses..

007. The markings were toned down as originally she carried 'Licence to Kill' and a Beretta silhouette but the brass were afraid of the 'Peace' camp idiots and changed it. It also really did appear in a Bond film.

The James Bond the F-111s appeared in was Octopussy. Upper Heyford was standing in for a German US Air Base where Octopussys Circus had a very sinister side - a bomb planted by the Films Villain.

Great images, guys! The F-111 was always a favourite of mine. Many memories of seeing them low level in Scotland as a teenager.

As well as appearing in a Bond movie they also appeared in The Fourth Protocol (1987).

Here is Pierce Brosnan checking out the serials from 09:00 onwards.
