Bassingbourn 1978

Post by Wingnutt »

Bassingbourn Barracks put on an air display in 1978, organised by the International Air Tattoo team. The main theme was a Harvard meet. I can't remember how many they managed to gather together, but it was certainly an impressive number. Here are some of my photographs, plus a scan of the programme cover.

And here are some further photos that my dad took, plus a scan of the flying programme. Some of these are a bit grainy, but you wouldn't want to miss a Starfighter, Buccaneer or Canberra in flight, would you?

I think the Invader must have been the "surprise" item.

That is indeed Sally B, "the Euroworld B-17", in her first air show scheme.

Some great memories here - I remember this show as if it were yesterday and still have many of the attendees listed in my book. I was at Odiham at the time and as 72 Sqn had 3 Wessex there, I was able to get the family a close inspection

I wanted to go but was on re-muster at Innsworth at the time, I'd also just missed the airshow there at Staverton Airport 3 weeks previous.

I was in the crowd somewhere  ....must admit I was thinking it was 1976 because I remember the heat was pretty uncomfortable!
I was a bit put out when I realised the Lightning wasnt displaying on the day I went, but then again its substitute WAS an F15

I was at Bassingbourn that day but didn't have a camera at the time. Thanks for posting those. Brings back some memories.

I was also there. Went up from Tonbridge (where I was living at the time) with my friend in his Land Rover. Good trip! I have the programme in my collection as well.

I remember being disappointed at the time as Greenham and the IAT took a "gap year." I went on the Saturday and missed the Lightning. Looking back though it was a great show apart from the relative lack of heavy metal. Great shots.
