Home of the Harrier Farewell!
Home of the Harrier Farewell!
Hi all,
I was lucky to have spent Thursday afternoon at the true home of the Harrier, RAF Wittering and was treated to a superb and entertaining display from some of IV(R) squadron's finest.
Here are a few images from a truly memorable afternoon.

what a lovely set of photos, it is sad indeed to be losing something that is worth so much to the capabilities of our Forces, and have proved that worth so many times over the years, and also something that you took for granted for so many years, the Harrier, it has just always been there! and why are we losing it so soon and for what? saving a bit of money that the Government will just throw away on something totally useless instead!

Great images from a sad day, reminds me of when we lost the Jaguar.

Fine set, but #2 is excellent Paul. As a matter of interest, what sort of focal length was required at Wittering? I had no idea there was a spot like that for photos until this week.

I was getting away with the 100-400 Dan, thanks to DB for sorting it with the land owner, a great but sad day. In some ways from that postion it's as good as Cotts.

Nice set, Paul! Let's hope for similar weather for this week, too.

Thanks for the replies all.
300mm was good for runway/take off shots and 70mm for full frame taxy shots.
I never knew you could get to this spot either Dan, it was my first time. So wish i had known about it in the past now, although i think there was some problems with the land owner.
Also, i think we were very lucky with where the jets were taking off from as there were togs and filmcrew at the tower so they were lining up half way down the runway.
On a normal days flying, i think the Harriers would be very high up by the time they got to you as most were on the Friday.
Cheers,
Paul

Fine set indeed Paul. Captured a very special but sad moment extremely well. Number 2 is great especially. I was still in anaesthetic mode so blew it.
Wittering has always provided fine opportunities but never been practical for the reason stated. That said, thanks to the land owner for being very accomodating. Good to catch up again. My pace will hopefully be quicker this week!!!!!!!
Cheers, ian

The spot's always been on my viewing guide (point C) but the difficulties of access and low level of activity at Wittering have conspired to make sure most people never went down there - Cottesmore was always a surer bet as it offered more activity and more flexibility to position yourself. I had a chat with the landowner on Tuesday and he was kind enough to let me bring a vehicle down there and didn't object to a few others on various days during the week just gone. I imagine the knowledge that he'd never be bothered again after that week was a plus point!
