Fly Navy! - early 1980s (updated again 7th July!)
Re: Fly Navy! - early 1980s (updated)
At last I've had a chance to sort out a few more!
Another Wessex HU5 for TonyO!
HMS Diomede's Wasp on deck.
HMS Naiad's Wasp at Prestwick
705 NAS Gazelle (and vintage tractor!)
Another Gazelle, being put through it's paces at a Wings parade.
An early Lynx, from HMS Avenger, visiting Culdrose.
A pair of 846 NAS Sea King HC4s on Hermes off the coast of Norway.
Britannia Flight Chipmunk at Roborough on a very wintery day!
771 NAS Sea Devon at Culdrose on a sunny day!
Another unusual Culdrose visitor, visiting with the C-1A on page 1.

Excellent pics Chris.
Reckon you snapped Gazelle flypast from the balcony of the 705 building?
The Chipmunk studes doing the running change seem to be "hot changing" their parachutes - blimey didn't think we had budgetary problems in those days!

Think there have always been budgetry problems!
"Parachute? Eee, you were lucky, when I were a lad there were sixteen of us int' Chipmunk with one hankie between us etc, etc"! (with apologies to Messrs Chapman, Cleese, Idle, Jones, Palin etc)

At rest on deck, with three 814 NAS Sea Kings in the background about to run in to practice a display routine!
899 NAS SHAR on the deck of Illustrious, ready to starrt
800 NAS SHAR low and fast
FRADU Hunter GA11 low (very low!) and fast

Tails!
(Illustrious alongside in New York, 1984.)

Bit short of Hunter shots , sadly. However here's a few more of other things, hope they will suffice!
Training.
Chippie at Roborough
RNEFTS Bulldog at Topcliffe
705 NAS Gazelle. Not sure why it's got "Royal Navvy" on the side - but there was an Irish guy on the course! Culdrose is visible in the background
Gazelle Balbo!
RFA Engadine in the Clyde with a 706 NAS Sea King HAS5 over the deck.
Jetstream formation over Goonhilly, with the Helford River in the background. Rare sight of a T1, T2 and a T3 together! Taken from the back of another Jetstream - not a good camera ship!
Another unusual visitor to Culdrose, a Portugese Air Force Puma sitting on the 706 NAS ramp

A pair of 772 NAS Wessex HU5s from Portland, visiting Prestwick
845 NAS Wessex HU5 all tucked up on the deck of Hermes
Antrim Flight Wessex HAS3 on the back of HMS Antrim
814 NAS Sea King HAS2 visiting Prestwick
826 NAS Sea King HAS5 visiting Prestwick, on a cold winter's morn!
846 NAS Sea King HC4 on the back of RFA Olmeda, June '81

Always great to see the old Fleet Air Arm hardware!
Brings back great memories of VLN in the 80s when I was growing up! Sea Kings, Wessex, Gazelles, Sea Herons, Sea Devons, SHARs, Hunters, Canberras, Chipmunks, Sea Furies....

Wow fascinating pictures! Will be keeping an eye on this thread!
Re: Fly Navy! - early 1980s (updated again 6th Jan)
Thanks for all the comments, Chaps!
Here's a couple more that might be of interest:
HMS Ark Royal on sea trials in the North Sea, late 1984.
It's predecessor, ending it's days at Cairn Ryan near Stranraer, seen in 1981
Watching them, watching us. Lots of clues that this "trawler" isn't fishing!

Nice one Chris! Brings back memories from when the Navy had other coulours other than grey! Don't remember the black tails on the 705 Gazelles though! Was it short lived?
Cheers Phil

Hi Chris,
Very interesting stuff, especially like the Jetstream trio.
Sad to see the carrier being decommisioned....hope the Ark does not suffer the same fate
Nice to chat to you tonight, by the way what scanner do you use for your negs, is it a dedicated negative scanner?
Your images have put me in mind of scanning some of my old ones
Cheers,
Jeff.

I know you think you understood what I said, but I'm not sure you realise that what I said is not what I meant.

Total pleasure to see so much and a Leander class fregate is not big enough for a sea king, they were only just big enough for wasps.
Nice set of pictures and yes keep em comin.

Absolutely brilliant stuff Chris, if only we had the same levels of kit these days, great photos too. A thread well worth coming back to.

Reminds me of the Rosyth Navy Days I attended, Years escape me at the moment but needless to say I was right chuffed getting to go on Illustrious one Year and Ark Royal the Next. Ah thems were the days, it was Sea Harrier FRS.1s on Lusty and the Ark with Sea Kings HAS and AEW. Brilliant .
