Goodbye C-130K XV305...and now XV220

Post by RickIngham »

After being stuck on Lyneham's Roundabout for 45 mins she finally passed through Wooton Bassett. Afterwards I gambled and headed to a motorway bridge where I was rewarded. It's a sad sight, sorry if this is the wrong section!

How she looked before:

And through Wootton Bassett:

Then the gamle paid off after an hour waiting on a cold bridge:

It's begun :surrender:

As it isn't being dis-mantled in situ could it be destined for a museum? Be nice to see this kept as somewhere in the loft I still have the old Airfix kit of her. Nice-pics.Must have been fun driving her down that High St.

I'm sure if it was destined for a museum they wouldn't of painted over the markings. The local papers and people I know in RAF Lyneham say it's off to be dismantled, then it's parts refurbished...

Is there a C-130K going to Cosford?

Great photos of a sad journey. Looks like it took some effort just getting it down the High Street!

Yes there is a C-130K scheduled for Cosford, but we did believe that she was going to be flown in!

Great set of shots here, and thanks for sharing them

Great captures rick.Well worth the wait.
They are the wings from 305, just the tail plane left now and i believe the rest are to be broken up on base. I haven't heard about a c-130 going to Cosford? anybody shed any light?

Out of interest - does anyone know why this aircraft isn't being dismantled at Lyneham? Lack of space?

As an aside - sneaky-beaky C-130K arrived back to Lyneham on three engines on Friday afternoon - hope everyone was ok.

Contract for disposal being carried out by Air & Ground Aviation Ltd based at Hixon: http://www.airandground.com/ who have an interesting page specifically for the four aircraft being disposed of: http://www.surplusaircraftparts.com/c130/. The rest of the site is interesting too

A tight squeeze in places! Sad to see 305 on her last trip,it would be nice if both a C1 and C3 make it to a museum although I suspect due to the size of the aircraft only one will end up being preserved.

Nice work Rick, a sad end to a fine aircraft.

Presumably Air & Ground will have paid peanuts for these C-130s but will now have the opportunity to charge us inordinate amounts selling the spares from these machines back to the RAF to keep the other C-130Ks going!

Museums at a guess I can see but only if they can afford them and want them - C-130 Hercules - are - Cosford, Duxford, Elvington, Airspace at Coventry, dare I say East Fortune (don't think so), Carlise, Dumfries and Galloway, NEAM Sunderland. Just a few guesses.

As Tony says, i've heard they want them for space 'bits' for their C1.P'. That was they can go on abit longer...
As much as i'd love to see one in a museum, it makes sense to use their parts!
