End of the C-130K Hercules: Updated 27th Feb: Boscombe XV197

Post by RickIngham »

One of my objectives between now and June is to photograph as many 'K's as possible as they are phased out of service.

A visit to a very dark Cambridge ticked off XV208, XV294, XV212, XV307 and XV299. Due to the photography restrictions I was unable to photograph what was in the hangars so i'm waiting for them to fly back to Lyneham to get them.

Now they want me want to

Are we ever going to see any of them at Museums, I know Cosford are due one, but I reckon Duxford should also be able to have one as well.

I'm still angry Snoopy won't be shown in a museum, After MA letting the apprentices rip the nose to bits it won't ever look like it did again, a unique aircraft in itself being thrown out to rot. Such a shame

Here, Here Tonka2009 I only saw "Snoopy" once at Fairford 1993 when she was still herself with all the bits and bobs attached now if they did exhibit her somewhere they would simply have to refit all the bits on. Even if they were replicas.

Not having a go here, but didn't the wing spar have to be radically modified to fit the testbed engine? IIRC there is no going back with that, so it would never 'look' right again. Unless a handy set of spare life-ex wings were grafted on - but then it makes it even less authentic from the original "Snoopy" we all regard with a tinge of nostalgia.

Fantastic Pictures as always Rick.
Very interesting thread although very depressing!
Would be good to see even the front part of the fuselage of Snoopy saved, what a great aircraft!

Great set Rick but very sad to see. I've always been fond of the old Herky.

XV299, what a sad sight.

I was fortunate enough to get a 2 hour flight in her whilst on a Annual camp with the Air Training Corps at RAF Lyneham.

It's very sad to see the pictures of all those Hercules aircraft being dismantled, living in Chippenham it was common place to see these wonderful aircraft flying daily, I was very fortunate to have flown on a Hercules three times in fact the first two times were actually my very first flights ever and they will Live with me forever and the third flight we were lucky to be in the cockpit on takeoff.
I can't quite remember the numbers but I think that one of them was maybe XV299 and one of the others was XV303 ?? in my vast collection of pictures I have some pictures taken from the back of the aircraft with just some rope netting stopping you from falling out while flying at about a 1000 feet down to the Severn Bridge over to Wales and back over Bristol, Bath and Chippenham and finally a low pass over Lyneham just before landing, I will see if I can find them.
Also in my loft we have two cuddly Herc's that were made in Lyneham to commemorate 25years I believe, they were made from old camouflage jackets and about 2 to 3 feet in size, again I will see if I can find them.

I bet they wished they haddn't scrapped them just yet, me thinks they had better put the wings back on ready to go to Libiya or any of the other grand excursions that the govenment wish to waste life and money on, that said great set of flicks. :tumbleweed: :snack: :surrender:
