Abandoned Airfields No 4 Leconfield

Post by Fred Martin »

As Leconfield will always be associated with the Lightning to most enthusiasts of my generation , what better reason is there to show a few more silver examples of this fabulous machine. Squadrons of them formed here , they were serviced here by 60MU , and they were even scrapped here . Now I'm starting to fill up ..... on with the pictures .

Smashing!...love the natural metal finish Lightnings.
Bit sad to see XM177 in that state,It was the first Lightning I ever saw (as far as I'm aware anyway) It solo displayed at the Abingdon BoB show 1971

Fabulous shots Fred. Although it was only a couple of minutes flying time north of Binbrook I never got the opportunity to visit Leconfield - it took a bit longer by road (and even longer before the bridge !) You certainly had some fantastic vantage spots for runway etc. over there.
Thanks again for posting.
Cheers

I was so gobsmacked by these superb Lightning shots I didn't even notice they were ever so slightly blue until Kev posted the "balanced" one. Another superb thread.

The original white balance looks rather more likely to me - clearly a sunny day with the sun high in a cloudless blue sky, not a sunny day with a, er, grey sky and a yellow fog...!!

Very hard to pick a favourite out of this selection, but I really like the smokey arrival shot of XR765. You can almost smell the rubber.

Superb set.

Makes me wish I'd paid more attention to the Lightning while it was still around - and that I'd had a longer lens!

Superb photos.
