Team Iskry's site is showing them appearing at Izmir, but on the 1st and 2nd of June, not the 4th and 5th... :dizzy:

They replacing Orlik?

Hi guys, look I don't mean to keep popping up like a preverbal bad penny hear but what is going on with this event, the line up seems pretty solid, but as yet there is no official website for the airshow and more importantly the spotters days, was looking back over the thread and a host of info was being promised back in Dec,accommodation packages included, being that it's less than 2 months until the show(hopefully)is on,I for one am getting somewhat concerned, have committed to flights, hotels and vacation for the show and spotters days.
In all respect to Eric, who I have emailed and also asked the question over the info required on this website, which seems to get side tracked, who is this guy?

Maybe my fellow UKAR can start to rally round and start asking the same questions, think the time has come to really give some concrete info over these spotters days and even an airshow website for that matter.

Apologies for offending anyone but getting somewhat fed up now at this silence,if anyone can shed some extra info on this then be appreciated, guess at end of the day if spotters days don't materialise it's a few extra days on the beach

Now, Eric and I don't always see eye to eye but I feel a need to put in more than one good word for him.

Eric is the organizer of the air-to-air academy which needs no introduction anymore, member of the EAC and, I could be wrong on the specifics of initiation here, also took the initiative to organize something for the spotters with the organization of the Turkish centennial show when he realized this would be a very rare opportunity for aviation photographers. As you know, there is no real airshow organizing 'tradition' in Turkey, let alone a spotters day, but still, he tried (and succeeded) to get the spotters days moving --long live the EAC for that one, I suppose -- trying to set up a more photographer friendly setting than shooting into the sun during the weekend. He didn't have to do this, he could have made life easier for himself, got special arrangements just for him and make us drool with lots of pretty pictures from the other side afterwards but instead he chose a far more difficult path to allow more enthusiasts, like we hopefully all are, to enjoy what will be one of the biggest shows in the world this year by providing them with the opportunity to watch arrivals and rehearsals with the sun in their preferred position, ie not in front. I can't be certain but if security is anything like Greece, I don't think it would be advisable to try something along the lines of the 'naughty field' in Turkey.

Now, while he is working on the practical side of things, bringing know-how to the table with the organizers, you have noticed that this organization seems to take its time getting the event website set up. This is unfortunate, especially because now people are starting to express doubts about Eric, but the lack of 'communication' on the part of the organization is not his fault. As you may have noticed, what little info is available, comes from him, the organization has not communicated save a mention on the Turkish air force website that there will be a show. He cannot help this, I can't be certain but knowing him a little he is no doubt conveying the sense of urgency spotters feel. None of this means the spottersdays won't take place, just as it doesn't mean the airshow won't happen. It just means the organization committee is not the fastest in communicating.

I'm sure all this will soon be forgotten once the site is up and everyone has registered, and people will even deny ever having expressed doubts when they are standing on the field with some juicy plane in front of their lenses

Hi Chrissie,

Thankyou for the info.

Appreciate the logistics, just even some info from him stating that it's taking longer than it originally was planned to organise and some feedback over our concerns.

Iam sure you can understand the concern and doubt that is now starting to creep in,but hat off to Eric for organising the spottersday, your info has certainly left no doubt about his credentials ,even if it's taking a bit longer to sort out.

Let's hope that info is forthcoming soon

I certainly understand everyone's impatience, but have come to accept we as travelling enthusiasts are on a different clock, ideally, we make plans in the preceding year if at all possible, or early on in the year itself if only to get decent rates on plane tickets and get the best hotel deals -- in some remote places simply find a hotel
Of course, regular events have structures in place, a website etc With one off-events like this one, this is different. I don't know if there even was a website for the show in 2001, but even so, it wouldn't fit the job anymore now. They certainly did not have spottersdays so this is something that is entirely new to the Turkish air force airshow.

Guys, AARDVARK in particular, please give Eric a break as I'm sure he's doing a stirling job and has much more important things to deal with on a day-to-day basis than dealing with 'speculation' from the likes of us - it's this kind of 'hounding' for information that sometimes gives us a bad name.

All the information will come out in due course, you just have to be patient rather than acting like a school kid who can't wait for Christmas. I'm going too but have other interests besides aviation and will be happy to take in some Turkish culture whatever the event turns out to be like.

Yes, I hope the event will be a good one too but let us let those involved in organising it do so and not p*** them off and possibly make them lose interest.

Hi Tim,

I was merely inquiring,as event is drawing near now over the current situation as by now some concrete info should be available on spotters day and airshow, not talking about participation but basic info and cost of spotters day packages.
Until Chrisse put me in the picture with Eric's credentials I had no I idea who he was and all info was being fed about show from just him,as mentioned no official info as yet,so hardly think this is acting like a spoilt child.

people like aardvark make me sick, period. They have no idea whatsoever how much work and effort have gone into the fact that there is a first spottersday in Turkey. Forums are read by officials too, and it would have been far easier to cancel this part of their celebrations.

the airshow in Izmir is a HUGE challenge for all involved, and the spotterspart is still there now, and only for the pleasure of the aviation photographers.

no need to reply to this post, I will make my final post here right below this one.

Hello to all again!

After my final meeting in Izmir airbase, I can provide you know with most of the information you all are waiting for:

The long awaited website will be online next week; some small adaptations are made now for the spottersday part, but everything should be running soon.

Spottersday on friday june 3:

report to gate between 7.30 and 8.30, on airbase until 14.30

you can photograph arrivals and rehursalflights from a position close to the runway and active taxiway ( please DO NOT have your imagination running wild, as arrivals come in from wednesday onwards )

take care of your own transport to and from the base.

>Showdays june 4 & 5 :

there will be a seperate area for spotters in the spectators zone.

Try to find your way to the airbase by using the public transport, especially in place for the showdays; trains & shuttlebuses ( because there might be a lot of traffic jams outside the airbase )

Spottersday on monday june 6:

report to gate between 7.30 and 8.30, on airbase until 14.30

you can photograph departuress from a position close to the runway and active taxiway.

take care of your own transport to and from the base.

SPOTTERS REGISTRATION:

>> Mandatory in your backpack: sunblock, water and lunch!!! Altough there might be some tents for shelter, it can get very hot in Izmir in june, 30 degrees or more.

>> registration on website: by name, email and pasportnumber
>> first come, first served: 1000 registrations accepted

>> SPOTTERDAYS WILL BE FREE !!

That's it for me, good luck to all and hopefully you will have a nice stay in Turkey. All info about aircraft participation and anything mentioned above you will find on the official website. Some countries previously announced do not send aircraft, some cancellations, but also some nice additions like Jordan F-16's ( static ) not 1 but 3 x JF-17 ( flying as well! ) and you will even see a dynamic display of a Pakistani F-16!

Thanks for all your patience, Eric
