Some photos from one of the very first air picnics in Poland usually organized by local aerodromes/authorities. What I like
in those smaller shows, is that the photo opportunities and freedom of movement usually not available on large airshows.

Does that translate as there are no safety measures in place whatsoever?

This is not wild west There are safety rules to follow on every airshow. This was in local term quite an event (few thousand visitors attending).
It's just the organizers are more willing to talk/cooperate with photo/press and because the show is held on smaller area than the larges ones
even smaller changes of photo spots give you different angles than on the large shows.
