Libyan forces 'capture Gaddafi'

We've been here before but

Libyan forces 'capture Gaddafi'

The Libyan transitional authorities have captured former Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, one of their commanders says.

The news came after transitional forces claimed control of Sirte, Col Gaddafi's birthplace and the last city where fighters loyal to him had held out.

And so now we will see if Libya is to become a democracy, in the accepted sense, or will go the way of Egypt following the overthrow of Mubarak.

News of his capture, badly wounded, or dead or during a live radio broadcast coming from various sources so no doubt the truth will emerge within the next few hours. The West can only cheer if and when a new democratically elected government is formed.

MISRATA, Libya | Thu Oct 20, 2011 1:57pm BST
(Reuters) - The body of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is being taken to a location which is being kept secret for security reasons, a National Transitional Council official said Thursday.

Gaddafi died of wounds suffered Thursday as fighters battling to complete an eight-month-old uprising against his rule overran his hometown Sirte, Libya's interim rulers said.

"Gaddafi's body is with our unit in a car and we are taking the body to a secret place for security reasons," Mohamed Abdel Kafi, an NTC official in the city of Misrata told Reuters.

BBC now reporting 'he was dragged through the streets before being shot by the rebels'. There are quite a few people that would rather have seen him tried for his crimes. One devil for another as far as i can see.

Well all I can say is who is next? Bin Laden and Gadaffi got binned this year, fair enough. But one thing I would like to point out is, this sort of scenario will keep repeating and playing out down the line every so often, therefore unless it affects us directly,(eg,we come under direct threat/attack) then we should have no truck with it and let them get on with it.And I am well aware of prior situations and events etc,but it leads us down a rocky road to politics, which is a dirty word in my vocabulary, and another discussion elsewhere.

I bet it wasn't too nice living under the chap. He had thousands of his own countrymen slaughtered and forced to live in poverty. Although I abhore the death penalty I think we should try to empathise with the people here. We seem to be keen to pass judgement on those in the developing world, but don't the Americans still burn their murders to death? Barely an eyebrow is raised.
