How to land a Griffin in a Greenhous

Post by Wes_Howes »

To kick off (pun intended  ) the Shropshire British Legion's 2011 Poppy Appeal, Shrewsbury Town FC organised for the matchball, for the game against AFC Wimbledon, to be delivered by a Griffin from RAF Shawbury. It made a change to the usual Squirell delivery. Not quite as spectacular as the confined area operations from SPTA but different.

Well caught Wes!

Heard it depart and return - and thought it was late in the day for an airtest!

Very nice indeed

If you put the date for the next match ball delievery on the message boards I reckon you could triple the attendance!

I'd definetly be up for going just to shoot that and then leave!...unless they're playing the mighty Plymouth any time soon?

Really Rick? That's a hell of a long way to travel! And they played Plymouth in the first game of the season.

Rich, the fans are below me in the West Stand, the prawn sandwich brigade all sit in the stand opposite.

Unfortunatley, because I had to video the match, I was rather limited in where I could got to get pics so I opted to stay on the gantry, rather than fight my way back throught the fans to get back up.

That time of year for helos and football grounds. We tended to get a Lynx at Reading FC. Nicely shot....a new form of confined landing!

I don't know about confined. They would't have a problem with 3 or 4 in a space like that.

Not forgetting the Gazelle that accompanied the Lynx.

Nice shots from Shrewsbury.

I see the game finished 0-0 which suggests the Griffin was the only highlight or was it not a bore draw?

It was hardly confined but I'm guessing the wind would have made things interesting below the height of the stands, as it was swirling and gusting quite strongly.

It was a rather disappointing game in the end, never mind.

Thanks for all the comments again though chaps

Never knew there were so many Reading fans on the board! I remember a AACHF Scout and Sioux at the mad stad around 1999/2000, then a Lynx a year or so later, and finally a Seaking HC4 that I never did get the serial of as it didn't land as they abseiled in.

Great pictures Wes
Having heard the 212 at Northolt earlier this month, that must have sounded fantastic in an enclosed stadium.

Not being into the 'beautiful' game I have not heard of this before, but it would appear from some of these replies it is a not un-common occurance?

Cheers,
Jeff.

Cheers Jeff, I think this is the third time a matchball has been delivered via chopper now. We are lucky having Shawbury so near by and that they have a great community relations team. The sound was quite impressive although it would have been better had the corners of the ground been filled in...

No worries John. Would love to see a Wokka deliver the matchball but I think the groundsmen would be a little upset with the 6 rather deep holes left in the turf
