Phantom GB - Zulu of 111sqn - Phinished 23/12
Hi all,
Had internet problems over the weekend and batteries ran out on the camera so photos tomorrow to kick start my first build for this GB.
As i mentioned previously, i spent my phormative spotting years looking over the phence at Leuchars watching Phantoms of 43, 111 and later 64 sqn/228 OCU and have always wanted to replicate them. Having built 228s flagship XT900/CO in 1/48th, the next one is from the most recent boxings of the 1/72 Fujimi Phantom FG1 built OOB as XV574/Z of 111 sqn.
Sprue shots and start tomorrow.
Arabest,
Geoff.

Hello again,
Well just what can i say about the best Spey Phantom available in 1/72? For me its the only game in town, this being 1 of 3 i have in the stash.
Decals are by Cartograf.
Hope to get things started later today but probably no updates for a week or 2 as 4 Morrocan Texan IIs, and a pile of Orions are tempting me!

A wee start for me with something i dont normally do!
The cockpit is wearing its decals, although i have a feeling they aint 100% accurate, but its a start for me anyway!
Apart from that, a few bits have been fabricated to address a slight problem with the fit between the fuselage and wings to hopefully avoid filler. If i get time over the weekend, i should have something that looks like a Phantom on the table.

Hi all,
A wee bit further on with this and should be able to throw some paint at it very soon! This was the state of play earlier this evening.
Having built my fair share of these, i knew some of the pitfalls with it. Dry fitting found the usual gap at the wing root so out came the spare sprue to gap out just behind the intakes. Still to be dealt with are 2 sink marks just in front of the auxiliary doors near the engine exhausts plus the usual issue with the intakes not being quite 100%. I seem to remember a step on the panel that contains the nose gear bay but this time it just needs a bit of blending.
Hope to have another update tomorrow.

Re: Phantom GB - Zulu of 111sqn
Hello again people,
Been pottering along with this one and have managed to address some of the problem areas with this kit. Nothing too much to cause problems but a bit annoying to deal with because of the curves in some places! The intakes on the nose were a right pain as all they were on the sprue was a block of slightly shaped plastic that had to be adjusted to suit. Think ive done a no bad job of them though.
So it was into the spray booth with 3 others and out with the primer earlier tonight and made it to this stage.
More paint over the next 2 days as im off and fingers crossed for a finish soon.

Hello again,
Well after battling the airbrush over the last few days, i managed to get some paint on another 2 Spits, a SpitHawk and this. Mostly used Xtracrylics but found the greys to be a bit prone to blocking the nozzle. Got there in the end after the Humbrol MSG didnt look right, resprayed with XA, a couple of touch ups and painting the engine area by hand.
Sadly i cant say the same of the F-16 for the other GB, the wing problem is putting me off!!! Anyway here are some pics.
Now i need to paint the metal panels on the tails, future, decals, cut up the main gear doors, assemble and fit the u/c and it should be finished. But not till next weekend!
Arabest,
Geoff.
PS, Just purchased another of the boxing that Deacon is building! Wont be built as an FG1 though!

Cheers chaps,
As we are over half way now, i hope to be finished this soon and be able to spend more time on the F-16. I have now started the decals and managed to get to this stage with the help of Micro Sol and Set.
More of the detail decals to come but im not 100% happy with the roundels as they stand out a bit.

Geoff.

Given the chance I take it you'll be hoping to do XV571 'A' of 43 Sqdn if the chance comes about? In whatever scale is available.
Re: Phantom GB - Zulu of 111sqn
Looks good mate! Roundels look good to me, would think they'd be fine after Klear and matting down?

Thanks for all the comments chaps.
Managed a wee bit more on this over the last few days after recovering from the dreaded manflu! I really hate putting on all the small stencil decals but i am pushing on. I am even brave enough to say that i may have more bits on it by Sunday.

Re: Phantom GB - Zulu of 111sqn
Hi again,
Didnt get the time to push on with this but last night managed to get as many stencils on as i was happy with.
But sat down at the table today, lost the centre canopy part so had to recover one from a stalled build. Then all the other parts just seemed to fall into place and got to here. One bit of a problem was with the rubber tyres. I couldnt understand why the ones in the box were too big for the hubs. It then dawned on me it was a set from a Tomcat i had lost a few years ago!
So a final push over the next week should have me an easy life by next weekend!

Made me chuckle over the mistake with the Tomcat tyres.

Hi all,
Well its to the stage i want it at so here is XV574/Z of 111 squadron at Leuchars.
More in the Phinished section. The original plan was to build another one but ive been enjoying other builds so more of that later.
Arabest,
Geoff.

That is a really tidy build Geoff.
You should be really proud of that one.
