Airshows late 1960's & 1970's

Post by ianm »

I have recently bought a new slide scanner to digitise some of the slides I have and have been busy going through those taken at airshows
in the late 1960's and 1970's. I have now loaded them onto my aviation photos website under the Scanned Photos category and the address
is listed at the bottom of the post.

Below is a sample selection from each year and if anyone knows the registration of the Fiat G91 could they please let me know as I have
been unable to find it so far.

Ian,

Fantastic scans!

One (really minor) criticism - a few would benefit levelling!

An interesting selection from days gone by - though I think you will find the F-102 that begins the selection (61002) was actually at Bentwaters in May 1969. I have a similar shot of the same aircraft and the date on the slide mount clearly says May 1969. Unfortunately, the Scramble show report site doesn't have a list for that year's Bentwaters open house, but I remember that it was a very damp and gloomy day.
I am not a loony... I used to be, but I think I am better now...

Nice scans, interesting period, I would be interested to know what scanner you used as well, was the slide film Kodachrome ?

All great shots.

Thank you for all the comments and am glad the photos brought back some memories for some of you. It's certainly been a nostalgia trip for me whilst doing the scans over the past
few weeks.

Having reviewed the slides again I agree that F-102 61002 was indeed taken at Bentwaters in 1969. For some reason that slide had W68 written on it which was obviously a mistake and as
the date on it had faded wasn't able to check it. I also found 2 others that I thought were taken at Wattisham so have corrected them on my website.

I have also added MM6239 to the Fiat G91 photo on my website. Just got an error trying to edit the original post so will have to change the captions later on.

I used to use mostly Kodachrome 64 for the slides although some of the static shots later on were shot on Kodachrome 25 film.

After reviewing the specs of several scanners I went for a Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE. Still getting to grips with some of the features on it. As mentioned on the website after
scanning the slides I then process the photos using Photoshop Elements 9.

Have just started going through my slides from the 1980's and will put another post up once I have updated my website.

Ian

I flew in one of those at St Mawgan in 78' - didn't record the serial as it was just a pax ride.

Agree - For what its worth Greenham 79 was the best show of hundreds I have attended. Watched it all on the South Side as I had travelled up with the RN Sharks team from Culdrose. Awesome free beer tent for aircrew was opened the second the last participants wheels touched the runway..

As an Abingdonman also, I too have fond memories of the Hastings - when did the last Squadron example retire and where from?
