Besides going to the TLP 2012-1 at Albacete, my two day trip to Spain offered me the opportunity to see the CASA C-101 Aviojet and ENAER T-35C Tamiz used for pilot training at Murcia - San Javier.
This place offers lots of nice photo opportunities but since the Tamiz and Aviojet use different runways you have to make choices and subsequently move around quite a bit. The C-101s use the south runway (05-23), the T-35s use the north (05L/23R) runway. Local civilian traffic also use the main southern runway. Only the south ends of both runways can be accessed since the north ends are enclosed by the AF Academy and Mediterranean Sea.
Flying start and finishes early (8am - 3pm) and continues all day. Since its the Spanisch AF flight training school, lots of approaches and touch & go's can be expected. On this day aprox. 8 different Tamiz and 12 Aviojets were seen flying in three waves (8am, 11am and 1pm). From the carpark at civilian terminal the Tamiz can be photographed on the taxiway and main runway but excessive plant cover/weeds along these make it hard to get a clean shot. Although regular patrols by Spanish military security forces were performed no problems or photographic limitations were encountered. A little crate or two step ladder offers a clean shot through the airbases relatively low fences.
Funny to see that about half of the flying C-101s were from Patrulla Águila which of course are mainly used for regular flight training. Also two C-101s from Ala 74 at Salamanca operated that day at San Javier.
Here some of the results, enjoy. Rgds, Carl.
