Sunderland airshow 2008 Sea Fret query

Postby eddywinch82 on Sat 25 Feb 2012, 12:15 am

Hi there,

Just wondering was it ever established what caused the fog at the Sunderland Airshow in 2008
as it was quite localised and i dont think it had ever happened before at the show. Or are seafogs quite common at Sunderland and its just been the luck of the draw
it hasnt happened at the show in the past ? I am trying to remember what the temperature was there that day ? any info would be appreciated

It wasn't that localised. On the way home we stopped to see what the conditions were like at Whitley Bay (coastal town) on the Sunday and it was the same there too. Fog like that isn't uncommon and I've seen my father's old camcorder tapes from past shows where similar conditions are on show, although admittedly there is still some flying able to take place. Certainly, it was much more 'extreme' than anything seen before to scrub the entire show I'd say. As for the temperature, I can't tell you what it was, but I was out on the pier on both days and I can confirm that it was sweltering. One thing I would say is that having those same conditions roll in, of the exact same severity for two days in a row was extremely unlikely, and a severe case of bad luck!

thanx for your post StevenH,

which sunderland shows were the seafogs at that you watched ?
I remember reading somewhere on the net about the blue eagles calling off
a display due to fog there at the 2000 show do you remember that ?

I'm sorry, neither I nor my father attended another Sunderland until 2005 so don't know about that one. The shows I've seen on video are from when I'm still a little lad, so probably very late eighties or early to mid nineties, I can't be any more specific I'm afraid. Like I say, the conditions look similar, although as I said, the fret we saw in 2008 was much more 'extreme' and probably a very rare event to be that heavy.

Pretty common all along the East Coast. I've arrived at Filey many times in glorious sunshine and not been able to see 10 feet on the beach.

Hi there,

Here is an article I found which is relevent to this thread :-

Almost identical conditions to that at the Sunderland airshow in 2008,
only this was at the cornish coast in June 2010, the article explains what caused
the conditions which would also explain the severe fret both days of the 2008 show

here is the link hope people find it interesting :-
