Yeovilton Air Day 2012 - 23rd June

Lets hope this is as good as last years excellent event. Although it always puzzles me the lack of Navy Merlins present. Was there even one flying last year? i also think the lack of a large aircraft has been disappointing in the last few years. We might even get some decent weather again!

Be nice if the very recent delivery of the Harrier GR9 to the museum could be made available for viewing statically at the show.. some nice pics in the warbird & classic aircraft photo section of the airframe.

Already Yeovilton is definitely worth attending. Last years show was outstanding.

Can we get the French Navy back please!

This would only be my second visit to the Air Day, does anyone have any tips on where to stand?

Just booked my tickets for Yeovilton this year, can't wait! :yahoo:

Is there any camping at Yeovilton or around the area as naturally all the B&B's have been booked up months ago?

Thumper......campervan and caravan camping on the sports ground opposite the main entrance mate. NO tents though on this site but there would be some near by I would think.

Thanks Razor, I'd be bringing a tent on the bike, hopefully something will be available though.

Also, I suppose the field at 27 end is out of bounds for arrivals and departures? Best place to be on those days?

No not out of bounds as such Thumper.....just managed by the land owner now.
Basicly, there is no standing directly under the approach flightpath anymore,i.e, amongst the lights or at the fence.
We have been allowed to sit alongside the little river that runs through the field though which isn't so bad to be honest and it is pretty much under the display line which is cool!
We cycle from the caravan park to the 27 end and the mod plod never stop us...in fact, they stop vehicles to let us through.
We then make our way along the public footpath at the rear of the 27 field, over the bridge then set up the little shelter alongside the stream.
Hi-vis clothed security(?) guys are there to keep people off the field but I personaly saw no issues and the last 2 years were fine.......just waiting for the land owner to start charging next!

IF you can go all day without getting sheep sh1t all over you then you are a better man than me btw!

Hahaha, after my last visit it is now firmly engrained in my memory to bring a beach towel or blanket to sit on due to the sheep poo!! The sheep are handy actually as last time they all ran away ages before I heard of a plane or helo due in, they make a nice early warning system if you don't have a scanner!

Thanks for the info on the field though, the river sounds like a good place to sit for an excellent view (I'll bring bug spray), I'd be happy to pay the field owner a few quid but don't tell him that yet

As always I will be attending Yeovilton this year no matter the weather but was hoping they might have been able to get the Typhoon display which I have yet to see at Yeovilton (came close in 2009 though) but seeing as it wasn't added when the Red Arrows and Tornado Demo were can I assume it just isnt available or might it yet be added

Just recieved an e-mail from Yeovilton Air Day stating that the Saudi Hawks will be making their debut at the Air Day.

"We are delighted to announce that The Royal Saudi Air Force’s Saudi Hawks’ Display Team will be making their debut display at Air Day 2012, their second ever in this country. Equipped with six BAE Hawk Mk65s, this highly exotic international display team will begin a short UK goodwill tour commencing at RNAS Yeovilton, performing here in company with the RAF Red Arrows.

Like the Red Arrows, the Saudi Hawks use one of the world’s best advanced jet trainers. First flown in 1974, the Hawk has since become a major UK defence export success story and, since forming in 1998, the Saudi Hawks have achieved their own considerable success. Their highly accomplished routine mixes formation loops and rolls with dynamic passes and, in the right weather conditions, includes a record-setting vertical palm tree split manoeuvre. As the Royal Saudi Air Force’s official aerobatic team, the Saudi Hawks are painted in the national colours of green and white and their figures are accented by thick smoke trails."

Great news about the Saudi Hawks, didn't get to see them fly at RIAT last year as I went on the Saturday and they were rained off.

Thats a bit hasty isnt it! None of the aircraft have flown in recent years, maybe not even this century! Plus the team obviously havent done a work up yet! So i really cant see how they are going to be ready in time for this!

Thats a nice post from someone who knows nothing about the current state of the jets or the pilots flying them.
