Good place to view the Airshow outside the Airport

Postby 03brad on Sat 17 Mar 2012, 11:55 pm

Is there a good place outside the airport to view the show ?

As much as i like supporting every Air show i go to unfortunately as their a week between RIAT and farnborough i cant afford to go to both on my wages  .
I decided to buy tickets for RIAT. but i would still like to attend farnborough :wall: .

If they are landing over the sheds near to the museum and the Swan pub is ideal.parking in side roads opposite is no problem mid week.
Farnborough aviation group has good advice plus if I remember a list of trade air display each day.

It really depends what you want. Is it to just generally watch the show or take photos?
Quite a few places are on my website www.farnboroughspotters.com under viewing.

generally there are 4 places
1) Swan Pub on 26 end of the runway, close to landing aircraft but poor view of the general flying-park in the town centre and walk up, 20min walk to station
2) Eeelmoor Bridge, at the 06 end, good if they are landing that way and a better general view of the flying, some parking a 10min walk away but fills up early. No access from public transport
3) the Southwood Side of the airfield near the TAG hangars, probably the best overall views but south facing-parking in the housing estate. Walk from town 20min
4)the relaxed option, the park in Southwood near Nokia. Plenty of open space , great for the larger/fast aircraft, smaller aircraft will be lost below the trees. Plenty of parking in the park carpark or side roads-no public transport.

Hope this helps

Pretty good, as in straight over the top  i suppose you could say it's Farnboroughs version of Totterdown at R.I.A.T , position wise, though the sun can be a prob for photograpy, as you are looking straight at it, if it shines.... here are a few shots from 2010.

Thanks 03brad  what days had you planned on going? it's just that at the Eelmoor end there are lots of parking restrictions airshow week, so you are going to have a bit of a walk, also there is a entrance gate aswell which is used and a high perimiter fence, so it will be a bit of a mare to be honest. I do think your best bet is either Southwood or the Swan pub end.

hope this helps

Hello,

I am only interested to see the flying display (during weekdays outside the airport) and not in the static aircrafts.
Which is the best place to watch and take photos?

Thanks,
SG

I went down the side of the Swan pub last show which I found very good.Parking in side roads was no problem opposite.

Would a 400MM lens be good enough for this place mate? only ask as a mate lives just up the road from there, about 2 min walk, was going to park at his and walk over to this location.

TBH im not sure, sorry, i live in Andover so not local. Its a just a friend lives right out side the airfield, so going up to him and parking at his place, then walking over to the field hopefully.

There is also another spot at the 06 end of the runway which you could consider, I think it is army land, but fully accessible and a fair few people there during the flying displays. There is not much parking nearby though so it would be a bit of a walk, but as far as I'm concerned it's worth it. Apologies for the quality of photos, they were taken on my phone.

Also a video, not my own, showing the sort of views.

The army land does have a good vantage point over the fence but a lot of aircraft make immediate right turns so don't fly overhead

313mm? That's a mega bit of cropping there then. You need 600mm to get a shot like that.
