Afraid of heights??

Afraid of heights??

I know we all love airplanes, which go high into the sky, but what about when you are high in the sky without being nestled comfortably withing your trusty aircraft? Check out this clip of some tower workers working on a TV broadcast tower near Houston. All I can say is you could not pay me enough to do their job!

I've seen that video a couple of times before but it still makes my tummy go a little squiggly. I take my hat off to those guys, you wouldn't get me up there doing their job for all the tea in China.

highest I ever worked was outside of a tower block in Oxford,I suppose it was around 120ft ....and I was glad to finish the job  ......but these type of guys have my admiration!

I could do that....if the steps were actually safe! That ring he uses to "secure" himself could easily slip off and he could fall to his death!

I would ask for, no demand, a parachute as a back up!

reading around a few internet forums it is the opinion of several other tower climbers that the practices shown on this video are not indicative of the industry and extremely irresponsible and dangerous.

The free climbing comment apparently is wrong and tower climbers are not permitted to ever climb without being hooked on and apparently guys like the one shown are the reason why there are a number of deaths per year in the profession.

I have completed a sky jump from the stratosphere tower in Las Vegas and that was 850 feet and that was pretty daunting this is twice the height and extremely scary and way above my comfortable working at height level :)
Was once Liveforriat2007 but that wasnt a great year so Ive decided to simply live for RIAT period.

That makes sense, I simply cant imagine any telecom campany or subcontractor allowing that method of climbing. Any Western country with developed H and S legislation would simply not allow it. But that does nothing to take away from the impact of the video.

First off, I start to get uneasy approaching the top of a ten foot step ladder, so climbing broadcast towers thousands of feet high is just right out of there for me. However, even if I could stomach a climb like that, I would have NO problem with the regulation that required me to be hooked on at all times because I'd have as many safety hooks attached to that tower as there were places to attach them too!
