Group B Rally doc from BBC - enjoy

From the producer of Grand Prix: The Killer Years and the Grierson-nominated Deadliest Crash: The 1955 Le Mans Disaster.

In the 1980s rallying was more popular than Formula 1. 'Group B' machines had taken the world by storm. De-regulation opened the way for the most exciting cars ever to hit the motorsport scene. Nothing like it has ever happened since.
'This is the fastest rallying there has ever been' - Peter Foubister.

For four wild and crazy years manufacturers scrambled to build ever more powerful cars to be driven by fearless mavericks who could handle the extreme power. The sport was heading out of control and the unregulated mayhem ended abruptly in 1986 after a series of horrific tragedies. This is the story of when fans, ambition, politics and cars collided.

'The fans were crazy. As the cars sped by the spectators ran into the road!' - Ari Vatanen

Agree about the 6r4 but also the Ford RS200. I think with many of these documentaries, they have to aim at the main market to provide broad appeal and always leave the enthusiast wanting more detail. They completely failed to mention that all of the Group B models got a new lease of life in Rallycross.

Each model was an amazing sight and sound and I could easily had an hour on each one. But I was impressed that they actually got to interview the big named drivers. What an amazing time, never to be repeated

I remember freezing my nuts off at Chatsworth in 84,85,86. just to see these monsters and you are right it was really worth it. You knew when the Quattro was coming through way before it was in vision because of the noise they made as they changed gear with that strange stutter and bang. ST the reason why I said about the Metro 6R4 was because I liked the way they took a small car and turned it into a fire breathing monster, and was designed by Williams.

You were right about Rally cross too as they ruled that for years after and they still rally them in historic rallies. and they have a special stage at Race and Retro at Stonleigh and sometimes with the original drivers.

To be fair to the 6R4, it was as bonkers as the rest of the Group B and you still find them Rallying these days, including several Ford engined machines!

What a great documentary. I really enjoyed that and it was good to catch up on what happened before I started watching it with the Escort Cosworth, Subaru Legacy and Mitsubishi Evo

Fair enough on the 6R4, just that the rest had a certain "good" look about them - Quattro, RS200, Stratos etc were brutes but looked great. I just thought the metro looked silly with that snowplough front and shopping trolley back end...

I've seen a couple of Quattros doing hill climbs and they just look utterly scary to drive, the sound they make is like nothing else

Of course, those cars should always have this as musical accompaniment...
