I'm just wondering who'll be visiting the poor woman in hospital - Cameron and Maude or Miliband and Balls? Good photo op or not good photo op? Hmmm, it's a toughie....

Well as soon as I heard the wise words of Oxbridge millionare (and part time petroleum spirit storage consultant) Francis Maude, I cleared out my garage (apart from the fireworks, Swan matches and paint thinners), went down to Halfords to buy up their entire stock of jerry cans and waited for 4 hours with all the other sensible people to fill up. On arriving home, I realised that I had driven 1/2 a mile and so my tank was dangerously close to half empty. Then, I saw on TV more people filling up and had a mild panic attack that my stocks were too low. So I gatherd every other suitable container in the house( pans, sherry glasses, buckets, thimbles, upside down Lego bricks, children's cupped hands etc) and went back to double my stock. Even now, I am having trouble sleeping with the worry on my low stock levels and will be carefully monitoring the media for the next sound piece of advice offered by Mr Maude.
So glad this this great country is governed by such clever (did I mention Oxbridge?) and sensible people.

Both garages I pass on the way to work were almost empty this morning. Where have all the panicers gone?

This reminds me of an experience that I had on the two lane section of the M3 near Winchester recently. I was at 70 in cruise control on the outside lane coming up to overtake a truck when I saw a large SUV type car in the mirror approaching fast in the inside lane with the obvious intention of passing me on the inside, then whipping out in front of me to pass the truck. Sadly for the SUV driver he didn't quite make it, and suddenly appeared very close in my rear-view mirror behind me. No doubt he was sitting there fuming as I continued to pass the truck at 70 before pulling in when safe to do so.

Well fellow UKARians,I managed to fill up this morning at the Corstorphine Tesco petrol station without too much bother,I did note there was a wee bit of panic buying as there's usually very few vehicles on that forecourt at that time of the day, however I hope common sense prevails and there will be enough to go round everyone.

We have a relative in the Hemel Hempstead Brandy distillery, last Thursday 500 litres of Brandy was discarded as contaminated, and my relative quickly took advantage of this, having a petrol engined car he was able to use it as fuel.....
no queues for him on the way home, and he said the car went like a bat out of hell too,and if we wanted to try it ourselves, the Brandy depot is selling it off cheap up to 12 noon today...I'll let you know tomorrow

I was expecting a fuel delivery at work on Friday which didn't show up - presumably due to the Fawley refinery being stretched to cope with other requests elsewhere.

One of the stories that chuckled me last week came from my boss - before the queues began to seriously mount around Hampshire, he pulled into a petrol station early on Thursday, and waited behind a lady who was in the process of filling up.
As he watched her click the fuel nozzle, she eased it out and squeezed it again to get a few more drops out (we all do it!) until it clicked again. The process was repeated a couple more times after that before she finished.
After she had paid and driven off etc. he made his way up to the pump, and just happened to notice how much money she'd spent/amount of fuel she took on board....

£5.71 / a smidgen over 4 litres. Madness!

To those whom may lack a SOH,please dont put brandy in your fuel tank...it will burn your valves out in no time!
folk will want to make sure they have enough fuel for Easter, and some garages wont get a delivery for a few days,so despite the price.....get some in!

So now we hear the union has nearly a month to decide to strike or not. What a great idea that is,why give them so long?
Take that to the last date add a week notice for the strike to take place. This brings it up to the end of May just in time for the Jubilee weekend. The union could ask for a impossible demand to get what they want as they know there is no way the employers or the government who are calling the shots to allow the disruption of a strike over the June weekend.

"Acas chief conciliator Peter Harwood said: "Following a further two days of intensive discussions, a final set of proposals has been produced by the fuel distribution contractors and Unite.

"The industrial action mandate has been extended to May 21 to enable Unite to consult with its Oils Trade Conference and the membership on these proposals."

It is ACAS which has extended the date for the reasons explained in their statement. It seems a long-winded process to me and you might be right in your scepticism, or it might simply be coincidental. Were a strike to be called as you have described the tanker drivers would certainly be the most loathed group of workers at the time!

Its a horrible thought, but if they want to maximise impact, just stretch out the negotiations until a week or two before the Olympics and then strike,

It would be a problem because I'm sure that within the 4,000 page dossier of instructions, nay ORDERS, from the IOC to the city holding the games it will INSIST on unimpeded and seamless carriage of officials and VIPs at all times. So in the event of petrol/diesel restrictions the emergency services, government officials and the armed services will have to give up their allocation to the gods of the IOC!!

What a surprise the union recomends turning down the deal,so a vote takes place and there are more talks needed which takes it up to the end of May,the union threatens unless we get our demands we strike over the Jubilee holiday and the employers have no choice but to give them what they want.Has anybody seen any details as to what the deal is yet?You can bet it will not involve the poor wage rises and pension deals that the majority of us have to accept, unless of course you are a banker or MP.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. Last year Mrs. Fumbs and I toured around the UK with an average gas price of £1.22 per litre. This year I susupect the price will be a little higher. We here in Canada and the U.S. have - http://gasbuddy.com/ to check daily what the price is on gas per litre and per gallon. Is there such a site in the UK that we can use? I'm just trying to plan our trip in advance. Last year we covered well over 2000 miles on the rental car and still have many more miles to go. This years stops include Dover to Lands End, Lands End to Tenby Wales and onto Snowdonia and then onto the Lakes and Edinburgh back down the coast to Whitby and York onto Waddington and onto RIAT... Now you see why I would like to see what gas prices are in advance  any help would be great.

This gives overall prices

This gives local prices but you need to register - we have and isn't too intrusive.

Rod currently its the supermarket chain Morrisons who have the cheapest fuel. A little advice though as I would hire a diesel car, preferably an eco one that get about 60 to 90 mpg. Currently I am getting £1.36 per litre for diesel and I think £1.32 per litre for petrol if thats a help.

Laugh now, but as soon as the govt, (of any colour), find out the number of users is increasing, they will tax the s--t out of it. I bought my first diesel car when diesel was cheaper than petrol, but soon after diesel cars took of in a big way and it wasn't long before the chancellor decided to bring petrol and diesel duty in line. You can bet your mortgage he didn't bring down the petrol duty. Currently I'm back on a petrol car, but I'm not impressed by the milage, so next one will be diesel.

I would not be surprised if that happens - but I dont think it will ever be as expensive as petrol or diesel as it is less environmentally damaging, so should be encouraged to some extent - in the mean time I am about £1000 per year better off.

Perhaps I have been unlucky but since I have been using the website for a few months I have only ever arrived at a listed station a few times to find the price as indicated. Occasionally it is lower but usually dearer. Still I am perservering!

I will be sticking with diesel,I've been quite far on several occasions and it is amazing just how little you do use,I find long distances better for the car than short journeys but that's a given.
