Fire Training.

Postby Spock on Wed 25 Apr 2012, 12:16 am

This Video shows the training us Volunteers Fire Fighters have to Complete every three months to remain on the Fire Team & demonstrate we can do the job required.

This Video shows the highlights of my Fire Training which I have to keep up to Date with every three months to remain a Volunteer Fire-fighter at Sandtoft EGCF.
This shows the Hot Fire Training we have to train for in as realistic conditions we can replicate.
There are two full time fire-fighters & four Volunteers at Sandtoft.
In this film, we show how to knock down a fire in the engine cowling & also replicate an Undercarriage fire.
The roving camera is operated by Phil Gleaden who is one of the full time Fire-fighters, also in the video is Lyndon Hopkinson, Officer In Command of Fire & rescue, Phil Hartshorn Volunteer who was driver & pump Operator & Myself who was Foam Branch & Helmet Camera.

Interesting to watch Trev - I didn't realise you had to carry out training every three months.

I've had to visit a number of airport fire services around the country as part of my previous day job. Once visited the fire section at Southampton Airport and watched a fire crew, who were down from Heathrow for training, put out a fire on the high pressure training rig. Very impressive. My hat goes off to anyone doing that job, volunteer or otherwise.

Thanks Darren.

four days later the trainers did their revalidation & I lit the fire for them to respond to, looking at the video of their Fire, which was exactly the same fire as shown here on this video, we didn't do too bad, they were better but the timings were 10 seconds in their favour.

They both told us that they would be more than happy to knock down fires shoulder to shoulder with us as they trust us & have seen that we have learnt & come a long way since starting 9 months ago.

we also did casualty evacuation from a real aircraft that morning after doing a trauma course a month before & we did it within the time limit allowed.
The casualty was a live person trapped in the aircraft complaining of neck pain, we put a collar on him then a KED then got him out onto a rescue board & away from the aircraft having made the aircraft safe first.

Proud we are, there are four volunteers & two full time fire & rescue persons at Sandtoft & the volunteers are all pilots who fly at Sandtoft.

We take pride in our work & i do Volunteer duty every other Sunday. I have been out on five emergency call outs so far all ended without incident & one being an aircraft that had engine failure on take off & landed in a field off the end of the runway.

when we have fly in's or aerobatic days all six of us are on duty around the airfield ready to respond.

Thanks for the interest in the video.

Don't need them for outside fires, we are being trained on BA for snatch rescues from aircraft with smoke filled cockpits but not needed for this kind of fire.
Remember we are only tackling General Aviation aircraft & twins, NOT 737's.

I'd beg to differ on that with all the different composite materials being used nowadays on aircraft, you never know what your breathing in, thats why when ever we attend vehicle fires BA is always worn was different when I started 20 years ago, only really wore for building and large fires, but not now

Great to see and brings back memories of what planted the seed for my career change!!!

BA for Fire crew at GA fields i think would open up quite a big can of worms. Causes no end of discussions at my CAT4 station but would it be affordable or practicable for a small operation such as Sandtoft? First defence for MMMFs is the wind direction then the foam blanket helps keep the dust down.
Arabest,
Geoff.
I work with Tommy the pilot!
