Thought i would shoot and share a few snaps before she departs for good. Going to miss this Comet alot as i used to look out for her every time i passed as a child.

She is being dismantled and sent to Shawbury to be stored and eventually preserved at Cosford.

It was said it was coming to Shawbury a while ago but storage don't know anything about it yet !

So Cosford will duplicate an airframe they already have a perfectly good example of?

Good to see it being preserved, but do the RAF Museum need another Comet?

I believe it's actually a RAF Museum aircraft and has been so for many years, but happened to be at Lyneham as a gate guardian.
The Hunter F.6A on guard at Cosford is also owned by the RAFM, or at least was.

I also have a very soft spot for XK699, having flown in her as a 16 year old ATC cadet on 23rd May 1962. Incongruous as it seems, I was allowed to take control of her from the right-hand seat, and actually flew her for about 10 minutes. Not just straight and level either, with a couple of direction changes, coupled with warnings that I was "dropping the starboard wing". According to my logbook, we were airborne for 105 minutes, and I can remember that we did 3 circuits-and-bumps into St. Mawgen. Happy days!

The Cosford Comet is a C1 and was never operated by the RAF, although I believe it was painted up in RAF colours at one time.

Cosford's Comet served with Air France for a short while but never saw RAF or BOAC service, It did however have a long career as a test airframe from Hatfield and so fits in with Cosford's experimental section. Would be good for it to receive its "tester" scheme - a very sinister black by all accounts.So Lyneham's would be more than welcome as a proper RAF machine.
