Koreans at RIAT

Postby SPLAT on Tue 01 May 2012, 11:14 am

With the Koreans coming to RIAT , will they be transported to Brize for rebuilding , as the website indicates that they will be delivered in several transporters?

Thanks

In order to get the aircraft – 10 in total, including two spares – they will have to be dismantled in Asia and flown the 5,000 mile journey in a fleet of large transport aircraft before being reassembled in the UK.

Where does it state several transporters?

The rumours and counter rumours on the Koreans abound the fencelines of the UK at the moment.

Current rumours mention Korean Airlines (KAL) cargo 747's, other rumours have 2 x AN124 bringing the jets. The airports mentioned include Farnborough, Fairford, a Belgian Lockheed Martin facility (?), Cambridge, Lakenheath and others. Farnborough and Fairford would in my view be ruled out, they will have enough going on without a full 10 jet rebuild going on and losing that amount of hangar space prior to major airshows.

The criteria for this adventure would be an airport that can take very large transports, has good maintenance facilities including hangar space for 10 Jets. An airport that deals with fast military jet fighters, inparticular test flying of the re-assembeled jets.

To be honest I think there is a plan, it is awfully complicated and no firm decisions have been made yet.

Brize Norton has not been mentioned in any conversations I have had.....that means it is a racing cert! My view on the Brize rumour is unlikely. Brize can handle the transports, but hangar space maybe an issue and the test flying of the jets maybe deemed a risk at the RAF's main transport hub...

Rule out Boscombe Down!

As Ian says, this airfield has to:
1. Have a long enough runway for heavylift aircraft be it 747-400/800, 777F or An-124.
2. Have plenty of spare hangarage or maintenance and re-building.
3. Be military.
4. Have clear or relatively clear airspace to allow test flights and practice routines, and familiarisation with UK airspace, which is potentially busier than in South Korea.

The Lockheed connection may have legs given the international marketing of the T50 is a jv with Lockheed.

I was told some weeks back that Korean Air Cargo would be doing the transportation and that Leeming would be involved.

I have no idea if this is true or not.

Does Leeming have the runway length and the hangar space, as one is used for RTP, one for 100 squadron and I dont't know about the other one, also the HAS' have F3s in them waiting for RTP or they did when I was doing work experience a couple of years back.

I think the largest aircraft ever on record to land at Leeming was an RAF C-17. A fully loaded 747 is quite a step-up in size and weight. So whether Leeming is capable or not is questionable.

I would also doubt Leeming is suitable to operate 747 freighters too - however, perhaps (if the suggestion is correct) Leeming's role is for assembly/flight test/training???

I've heard they are not coming now because a group of enthusiasts on a forum can't agree where they're going to land.

I see waddington are now trying to get them so we can now argue over continent and where their first display will be. Talk about airshows all looking the same thank goodness for the reality check of blank hardstandings provided by Leuchars.

Surely they go straight into Waddo as that is their first display, and has a plenty big enough runway?

waddington has many issues, one of the issues is that it is an RAF base and they have variuous rules about the aircraft displays. also the weight of the aircarft, last year the tarmac was under stress from the weight of the thunderbirds f-16.

Wasn't the tarmac issue just where the F-16s were parked as it isn't as durable there apparently.

Surely Brize is THE obvious choice??!?

Had to look twice at the thread title - thought it read "Kierans at RIAT" which is a bit of a given, especially this year..
