Russian Air Force Centenary show

Post by Captain Skyhawk »

Hi,
It would appear that there will be a big show in Moscow this August (11-12) to mark 100 years of the Russian Air Force. Great, you might say, but that is about the information that exists about it (that I can find, anyway). Two tour companies are running trips to it, but they can't agree on where it actually is - Ian Allan Tours say it's at Zhukovsky and Aeroprints say it's at Chakalovskya, which is a transport base to the north east of the city.
Does anyone know any more about this show?. It could be great, but there seems to be nothing else online about it yet unless anyone knows better...

up and until a month ago it could have been at either base on the weekend of 11/12 or 18/19. But it is at Zhukovsky on 12 th August, which is when I am there. Not sure about Saturday 11th.

Thanks Phil. Have just seen the Frecce schedule hough and it gives both Sat and Sun - and at Chalalovskya: http://www.aeronautica.difesa.it/VETRIN ... a2012.aspx but I don't know when that was last updated.

Don't forget that Chkalovskaya is used as a base for aircraft participating in shows at Zhukovsky (the Russian Knights & Strizhi fly up there from Kubinka during MAKS)

So the Tricolori could be based there - and display at Zhukovsky - (although in the past - eg 2004 - they were based at Zhukovsky)

Plus Chkalovskaya is an operational base - so I doubt they'd hold a show there.

Just thinking out loud...

Take the express airport train to Paveletskiy (40 minutes). Then use the metro to head eastbound up to Komsomolskaya (3 stops, 15 minutes, brown route). Over the road from this metro station is Kazanskaya main station. Take a stopping service from here to Otdykh (50 minutes, the train is destined for Platforma.47 km). From here there will be a bus shuttle to Zhukovsky events.

Red Arrows are now showing as displaying in Moscow on 11/12 August.............................

First time ever visit to an airshow in Moscow IIRC.

They visited Kubinka and the Russian Knights/Strizhi way back - but AFAIK, they haven't displayed in public in Russia before.

The Frecce Tricolori & Patrouille de France have both displayed at MAKS a few times.

Hi,

Some news from the motherland,

The Russian Air Force have invited 115 countries to the celebrations during August, 69 have so far confirmed with 9 display teams also confirmed.

Bare in mind that there will also be an airshow in St.Petersburg & other airfields. So, some of those invited may be split between the two shows & various bases.

On another note a bit late for the show, but in 2015 a new display team will appear equipped with Yak-130 trainers.

See you there.....

Sounds promising! Do we know which those 9 teams are which are already confirmed? Hopefully the air display will feature some Russian AF aircraft and not just aerobatic teams...

we have no information about aerobatic teams, but their participation have already confirmed the following countries:
1. UK
2. USA
3. Italy
4. Turkey
5. France
6. Poland
7. Finland
8. Israel
9. aerobatic team "Baltic bees"

If u need the information how to get the place (Moscow i mean) u are wellcome with your questions. The closer to the event the more information. Dont forget about the repetitions, guests arriving & Kubinka - the place where Swifts & Russian Knights will be training actively before the event.

how safe is it to travel to Russia under your own steam for one of these shows?

Is it still a case of being risky, bribing the law etc? Thinking of doing this show and a general visit to Russia, but dont fancy doing it as a spotters tour.

Apart from the language barrier, it is fine. Ive never encountered any unsafe situations and never had to take risks. As a tourist, using an accepted visa, there is nothing to stop you attending a public event in Russia.

Kieran has posted an interesting list of potential/planned participants to display at Zhukovsky. However, looking at the link he provided, the highlight of the bunch for me is this.....

6hMi 20-28 "Berkut" 16.18-16.33 Air Group flying wedge

Same here. I managed to get to MAKS last year on my own steam and encountered no problems apart from the language, as Tim states. Allow a month to get your visa as it was quite a task just to fill the online forms out correctly. You need to have an invite from an institution to apply, but this can be supplied by your hotel.
Traveling on the Moscow Metro can be a little confusing, but if you take your time and not jump on the 1st train, it is ok. The underground is a tourist attraction in itself. The train journey was pretty simple, although extremely crowded, and you won't have any problem getting from the station to the airfield as the bus shuttles are very well organised. Follow the crowds. Getting the right train tickets was probably the hardest language barrier. Go for the younger cashiers as they were more friendly! The ticket officers at the show spoke English.

I guess if we could get a group together, a minibus would be a better solution! I am seriously thinking of returning for this show just for the SU-35 alone!

Looks like an amazing show, with the flypasts of the rare stuff.

Myself and another enthusiast are planning on travelling out on the friday(10th),2 days at the show and then heading back on the 13th,if any other peeps are up for the trip,(know some tour operators are organising trips but its for longer and costing over £1,000,which is fine if you want to go down that route), but it can be done "ad hoc" so to speak.

Be good to get a group of us together.

Hello to all at the airshow.co.uk forum.

This is my first post so I hope I'm going about things the right way.

I've visited MAKS over the past 10 years sorting flights , hotels , MAKS tickets etc doing everything myself and have had no problems what so ever. The language thing can prove a bit difficult some times but if you make the effort with a few words of Russian most people seem very happy to help.

Suffice to say I've booked my flights and hotel ready for the 100th Anniversary show but as yet have had no luck in tracking down any web sites with any info on the event for ticket prices , aircraft displays etc. Someone I know at Kamov says that it will be a 2 day show , on 11 August there will be the show The Legends of World Air Force and on 12 August there will be the show The Common Sky. Apart from that I know nothing.

Where have the details regarding displaying Aircraft come from ? Can anyone pass on any details / links of these sites ?

Thanks in advance for any help and if I find anything else out I'll be putting it up on the forum.

Best rergards,
Ian
